My girlfriend from many years back told me while I was playing this song, that her uncle was the gentleman who was the caretaker on Neil Young's estate, which he wrote this song about. Small world indeed.

Well "Heart of Gold" was a such a hit on the radio back in 1973 when I was 13 years old. Then when I turned 16 and had my first part time job, big money coming in, you know....I bought the Harvest album. I listened to "Old man" on that album and immediately I knew there was something "right" about that song. I bought my guitar and played the album over and over, wearing out my turntable (and the album) trying to learn how to play that song. Fast forward into my adult life, I had this son with a terrible terrible brain disease, when I played this song to him, I could just feel the comfort that I brought to him and to myself. Thanks Neil, for making our lives better.

Over time this song has meant different things to me but both related to my old man, my father. 40+ yrs after 1st hearing it and falling in love with it because I felt it sardonically captured how different I believed we were and how different I wanted us to be.we are. Now with the experience of life I find it reflecting just how much we really are alike, and I'm really grateful for that. Neil, you've been the soundtrack to my life for the longest time and although we've only met once, to me it's one of the longest and most cherished relationships I've ever had. Long may you run.

@John Yerkov, I've seen Neil Young just like you solo with CSNY so many times too and every show was phenomenal. I still have a Crosby Stills Nash and Young t-shirt that I wore in high school. It's actually in my senior yearbook. Four phenomenal musicians. Their music will never get old and I will listen to it until the day I die.
