I always thought racing was just driving fast but this two minute clip made me realize its incredibly strategic

The fact that that’s actually taken into account in the game is almost as impressive as the knowledge to use it

This reminds me of Verstappens 2016 wet weather drive at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The dude overtook more people in a wet race than Williams did all of 2019 🤯

This kind of makes sense now why everyone was running all over the place during the rain race in New Hampshire last Sunday

The racing line is slippery in the wet because it's rubbered in.
You're practically gripping with rubber tires on a rubber surface when it's heavily rubbered.
But when it's wet, rubber becomes slippery and you get the opposite effect, so you have to stay off it.
There are also oils floating on the surface when it gets wet.
The rubber will remain embedded in the surface until it gets washed off by rain.
The rubbered line is inferior for grip but superior geometrically so you have to factor it all in for figuring out which line is best in the wet.
In the extreme heat of Summer, were you to try and walk on the rubbered racing line your shoes would stick to it like you're trying to walk on semi-hardened glue.

I'd like to believe this is why Sena was so good at rain racing. He was never in line with anybody else he was just off to the side out of the racing line passing everyone.

IRL racing in the wet separates the great from the rest. Absolutely love it . Gran Turismo 7 nails it, especially managing tire wear as it dries if on wetters.

The subtleties of this high-level racing are awesome to hear.

I love rain races. Even in hairscrambles that I race, I love it. On pavement tracks, it’s so fun and interesting seeing the strategies that teams and drivers run that differ so wildly from traditional dry racing. So cool!

Another major factor, at least irl, is all the rubber that's laid down on the dry line. While in dry conditions, that rubber helps you gain more traction but as soon as it gets wet, it gets super slippery.

What blows my mind everytime is how increadibly detailed simulators are nowadays. Even how rough or smooth the tracks are is in the game and impacts how cars behave. It's crazy how far all of thistechnology has advanced over the last like 15 years. And I'm saying that, sounding like a boomer, despite being 22 years old...

Iracing's race week from two weeks ago. I was there and I enjoyed it. Snetterton!

Never knew this. I’d put this technique into practice simply by accident. You learn something new everyday

Kudos to iracing to being so realistic in even small details.

Thank you so much, this is the best explanation of rain racing I've seen.
