BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe review - better than a 3 Series?

Introducing the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe! It’s the 4 door edition of the 4 Series, and Mat’s on hand to see if this ‘coupe’ 4-door has enough to convince you to spend a bit extra and choose it instead of the 3 Series!

Starting with the exterior design, as you’d expect there’s a sloping roof from the back seats through to the rear, and a number of minor (yet oh-so-good) features that stand it out compared to the 3 Series, such as frameless door windows at the back! Otherwise, the design is largely reminiscent of the regular 4 Series.

Under the bonnet, it’s no surprise that there isn’t much to separate either car. If you get your hands on the M440i edition, as we have here, you’ll find a 3-litre turbo straight-six under the bonnet that can deliver 374hp.

So there’s no denying it looks great, and the performance is more than adequate, but should you really choose one when the starting price is £9,000 more than what you’d pay for an entry-level 3 Series?! You’d better stick with Mat and find out for yourself!

In the old generation, you were like “ok I’ll pay the extra cause the 440GC looks a bit better than the 340i.” But this time around I’m like “yeah so I’ll save 10k and get the cheaper 340 cause it looks 100x better”

I've got to say, the new grille grew on me. I saw a 430i Gran coupe (in M Sport styling), and it looks really good as long as the grille surround/insides are in black.

I had a brand new 4 Series GC. I absolutely loved it. Now my ex-wife has a 4 Series GC and I have load of bills and a 6yo Insignia.

In Denmark, the base spec 420i Gran Coupe cost the same as the i4 M50.. Don't think we'll see many of these around!

I have a 420d (previous generation) and I think it’s much more practical than a 3 series due to the much better boot entry and well, it looks much better … but in Portugal at least, the price difference wasn’t so huge, so maybe that’s why I like it so much against the 3 series

I really don’t think it looks any more “sporty” than the 3 series now. Sits too high and just doesn’t look as sleek as the old gen. Also those door handles don’t look right to my eye but each to their own.

2:12 I love how the question for every new bmw design is not 'do you like it?' but 'do you like it yet?', like noone likes new bmw designs but they just grow on us.

Bought this car in the shadow line package over a month ago. Me and the wife love it. Test drove 3 series & in the states surrounded by big vehicles, 3 series are great but TOO small. Plus for the money give me the newer grille! ‘22 3 series visually was no different looking from any previous year.
