Everybody knows the "candyman"...you know, look in your bathroom mirror, say "candyman" five times, and he'll appear? Well, this horror story must've started somewhere. That somewhere is 1980s Chicago, when elderly Ruthie Mae McCoy was was tragically killed by "a man entering through her bathroom mirror."

I finally figured out why you're the only true crime person I can stand to watch: you actually put a lot of emphasis on the victims! A lot of the others often seem like they are glorifying the perpetrators or the investigators, but you usually spend a great deal of time talking about & empathizing with the victims. The fact she did everything right and had a neighbor saying she would always answer the door just shows they didn’t care so many people mainly the police failed her as during these times happened a lot to poc especially in these run down neighborhoods it’s so sad she deserved better. I can’t imagine how scared she was while waiting and thinking help was on the way rest easy Ruth ❤

Honestly, Ruthie's actual killers are ultimately responsible, but like... the cops and the building managers are just as bad. She called asking for help and saying someone was breaking in and nobody did anything to help her!

I find it rather strange that police still need a warrant to enter a property when 2 people reported hearing gun shots and the occupant of said address aren’t answering…

The fact that Ruthie called 911 gives the police probable cause to break down the door!! They don't need a warrant at that point! Unbelievable.

It’s such a shame about Ruthie. It was a sign of the times in Chicago, and other cities. In NYC, the projects were a clean, safe place to live in the 50’s and 60s. That changed after the mid 70s, unfortunately things went downhill. It’s the same story of the cities trying to keep poor people in their place. Thank you for your stories, Bailey. You are truly a compassionate person.
