To be fair, discovering a dead species is not the same as discovering a live one. For example, assume that T-Rex had not been discovered yet. The likelihood that it was alive would be astronomically low; it’s just too big for us to reasonably assume we’ve missed it walking around in the world. But the likelihood that we haven’t found the animal because it’s dead and buried is a different thing.

Fun fact; there's a scene early on when the girls are in caves, but the crawlers aren't known yet, and you can see a figure in the background. That was a mistake and a infact it was just someone from the crew who accidentally went into frame, but the director left it in because a) it will give the viewer a bit more of a "oh crap. They're in danger" feeling before the characters. And 2) which is more of a theory; the viewer won't be as blindsided by the crawlers as normal. Which I love
