Growing corn is an absolute blast, but there are a LOT of things that can go wrong in the growing process! Today I join Brijette from San Diego Seed Company and we run through some fantastic tips for planting corn, fertilizing corn, and how to know when to harvest corn.

If you plant too shallow, don't fret too much; Once the stalks are about a foot tall or more, mound up dirt around them about an inch or so, to compensate for the shallow seed depth.

1. Start with fresh corn seeds for the best results.

2. Directly sow seeds approximately 1.5 to 2 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart.

3. Cover with soil, space your rows of seeds 30 to 36

inches apart.

4. Water your block of corn well after planting.

5. Corn stalks are sturdy and should not need staking.

I read that Boron levels in the soil also affects pollination, indicating trace minerals are as important as the macro nutrients. Also understand sulfur is an important element during the growth and plant development stages of corn.

If your doing small scale, less then 50 plants, I personally will go out and hand pollinate ( bend over the tables and rub it on the sills) yeah it's a little extra work, but it's well worth it in the end
