For me, I can answer the 'why not the roots' thing. My scalp would murder me. I have really bad psoriasis on my scalp and it gets inflamed and irritated easily. So, when I finally bleached mine for the first time this year, I had my stylist not go to the root.

Yesterday my aunt bleached my hair and its a mix of brown and blonde im a natural brunette and i was going to color my hair a bright dark red but i like the blonde and brown mix

I never bleach my roots because I have a very sensitive scalp. Bleach comes anywhere near my scalp I'm in agony.
