Paramahansa Yogananda on Kriya Yoga — The Greatest Proof of God

Author of the best-selling spiritual classic Autobiography of a Yogi, this beloved world teacher came to America in 1920 from his native India, and was the first great master of yoga to live and teach in the West for an extended period (more than 30 years). He is now widely recognized as the Father of Yoga in the West. He founded Self-Realization Fellowship (1920) and Yogoda Satsanga Society of India (1917), which continue to carry on his spiritual legacy worldwide under the leadership of Brother Chidananda, president and spiritual head of SRF/YSS.

This is the second recording in Self-Realization Fellowship’s Collector’s Series of rare archival talks by Paramahansa Yogananda. This talk was recorded on January 5, 1952, during a joyous gathering at the Self-Realization Fellowship Mother Center in honor of Paramahansa Yogananda’s birthday. The occasion was especially significant for it was just two months later that the great Master left his body. During the events of the evening, Paramahansaji addressed the gathering several times, not as one might speak in a formal lecture or public address, but in a spontaneous outpouring of his heart and soul to his closest disciples and friends. Aware that soon he would no longer be physically with them, Paramahansaji touches upon the entire spectrum of spiritual living — all of the vital necessities for creating a dynamic, living relationship with God. He conveys with delightful humor and compassionate understanding why God is the only permanent solution to the enduring problems of human existence.

Through personal stories and practical guidance, and through the example of his own intimate communion with the Divine Beloved who manifested to him even as he spoke, Paramahansaji gives an unforgettable glimpse of that awakened consciousness in which all mortal dreams of limitation melt away in the blissful awareness of God, the sole Reality.

Years ago I read his book "Autobiography of a Yogi" and every time I picked it up my hands would start to tingle. Then at work one of the employees was from India and we started to talk about his book and I told him how my hands would tingle and he said that his hands would tingle as well. Recently two years ago I worked with a very young man who was a preacher. Hedied unexpectedly. I attended a funeral wake his parents held where many of his friendsand co-workers also attended. He was loved by all. At the funeral a pamphlet with his photo was handed out. I received one and have saved it for years. I put it in my bookcase and from time to time I would look at his photo because I really felt how special he was and pray a silent prayer. The last time I looked at the pamphlet my hands started to tingle. He is truly with God.

What a lovely metaphorical telling of the cosmic vision. It is so wonderful to hear Yogananda speak of the light, and how we are just actors playing a part in a great drama. The language he uses is so quaint, and so of the 1920s and 1930s, and yet it is so powerful, still. 🙂✨

Just listening to these words one can change the consciousness. He said of an highly advanced disciple, "He knows how to listen." We need to repeatedly listen to these words and absorb them with our being and not just our ears.
