this was surprisingly informative, thanks.

I would like to add something from personal experience; I used these adapter on servers’ PCIE 1.0 & 2.0 lanes before and it’s still awesome. If you need sequential reads and writes it will kind of suck, but still faster than any HDD, however if you have GBs of small files it’s the random IOPS that the nvme provides that is pure amaze balls

I opened youtube to watch somthing else. But I remembered this from the livestream so decided to watch it again lol!

What a great explanation!!

I'm glad that mentioned the PCI-E-Lane topic.
You can hardly point out hard enough these adapters don't solve the problem of not sufficient PCI-E-Lanes.
First use your onboard M2 slots, then use the adapter (in my case i went over the chipset, but it is still 2-times faster than a sata ssd. (all 3 drives are gen 3). smaller one (and slightly faster) as system drive, the other both work as Source and target drive when concatenating video files to a larger file (Videos from a Gopro) or when converting/resampling the large files. Honestly for the resampling process the speed of a sata ssd is sufficient, in the concatenating you recognize that the speed is not cut into half (reading and writing to the physical same drive).

addendum: the inexpensive 4x/4x or 4x/4x/4x/4x bifurcation card is NOT just a signal path adapter. there is a clock generator pin that needs a small IC to be sent to all bifurcated devices as it's a 2 way negotiation and having multiple devices on the same wire wouldn't work.

what the significantly more expensive cards do is turn a single 4x/8x/16x slot into four nvme slots that share bandwidth with a multiplexer <- this is the exotic expensive part. some also have onboard raid array functionality and/or a rom for booting off of it.

for bifurcation supermicro makes a fairly inexpensive 4x/4x card i don't recall the name of. sub €$£40.

1:12 Haswell should be exactly on the transition from DDR3 to DDR4. Some boards was still using DDR3. My old E3-1231V3 a.k.a. I7 4770 without iGPU was on a Z97 DDR3 mainboard.

Shouldn't be unless you run out of PCIe lanes. The new X570S boards have up to 4 m.2 slots and can give you full Gen 4x4 bandwidth. Granted, they disable some SATA ports and the bottom PCIe slot to do it, but pretty great if you want to go nuts with your m.2 slots.

Didn't know that about EPYC. The day may come when I need to sit down, stare at the manual (rtfm again) and do some lane math. Usually have a GPU (2 main rigs), but my older processors might have the chance that one of those converter units could be handy (though usually I drop in hand me down satas). Nice topic.

I put adata xpg8200 drive into adapter cause I needed more ssd storage on old computer and i planned to upgrade it. It had transfer speed 1.6GB/s on i5-4590 and now it has 3.5GB/s read on Ryzen 5900x. And yes, it's just wires, one capacitor, one resistor, LED and slot.

Could you please do more motherboard compressions with explicted diffrances comparison (such as CPU / chipset lanes)
Most only talks about Vram & temperatures.
And less about future proofing (such as storage expensios)

Even if my mobo supported bifurcation, I can't use my second x16 because 3090 is so fat that a hyper x nvme adapter would choke the GPU. It would sit right under the fan physically touching them almost.

Why did Samsung limit its 980 pro to 2tb Max? I've seen some others going up to 4tb...

My B460m disables Sata 1 when using the top m.2 slot. Really disappointing since i wanted to use all 6 sata ports.

I get smicro stutter in my games sometimes and idky. In some games my gpu usage (Rtx 3060) be around 89% under load in games . I have a Ryzen 7 5800x and 32gb of CL18 3600 mhz ram. I don’t have a nvme m.2 I have a Sata SSD 256gb . Can somebody help me resolve this ? I stutters suck
