Kalpana Chawla had humble beginnings in the small town of Karnal , Haryana. She was an aviation and flying enthusiast ever since she was little child .She graduated from Tagore School and went on to pursue a B.E degree in Aeronautical Engineering and moved to the United States to complete her Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas and a PhD in the same field from University of Colorado Boulder thereafter. The same year of completing her PhD , Kalpana Chawla started working at the NASA Ames Research Centre where she did computational Fluid dynamics research on vertical, short, take- off and landing concepts. She served as crew representative of shuttle and station flight crew equipment in 1988 and went on to become the lead for Astronauts Office's Crew Systems And Habitability Section soon afterwards. On November 19, 1997, Kalpana Chawla became the first woman of Indian origin to fly to space as part of the six-astronaut crew that flew the Space Shuttle Columbia flight STS-87.
