I still want to get the A7SIII (for high frame rates) but I was able to pick up the A7IV and boy am I not disappointed at all. I’m coming from an A7RIII and I do lots of concert photo/video and the A7IV is perfect for that scenario. With the quick flip of a button I can go from photo to video and within the menu I can previously setup what I want to transfer from both, so now I’m able to hit record or take a photo without worrying if I had my settings correct in the heat of the moment. I’m the past I missed shots because of fumbling with the settings going from one or the other or accidentally leaving the shutter wrong so I ended up with weird video or a blurry photo. And the autofocus speed difference coming from my A7RIII is night and day. And I could’ve picked up the A1 but to me that’s not $4k better than the A7IV and I can still get the A7SIII and still save $500 on total cost. Even if money is no object, I would still probably rather have the A7IV/A7SIII combo over the A1.

Why are some people so hung up on the 4K 60 crop mode? Pretty much every ARRI and RED, as well as the Sony and Canon cinema cameras have sensors roughly the same size as an APS-C sensor, the same size as the 4K 60 crop mode on the a7IV. Its a non issue. The a7IV trounces the a7S III in 4K 24 and 30 resolution as it downsamples from 7K, while the a7S III can only do 4.2K So the a7IV wins in resolution as well. Factor in the a7IV is a WAY better stills camera with a better AF system, with separate photo and video settings, clear image zoom, focus breathing comp and its a $1k cheaper and its a no brainer IMO. a7IV all day. Its pretty much perfect IMO.

Having owned them both. It’s the A7iv. 12mp is the biggest difference. Crop mode, clear image zoom, focus breathing comp, cropping for photography, oversampled 7k, photo/video switch & use the streaming everyday for work ✨flexibility✨

You have to really want 4k120 or external raw. The evf was really nice too but 33mp changes how you shoot much more and much less limiting than 12mp. 60p also helps with rolling shutter as well.

Sold a7siii for $4k & bought two A7iv (events, portraits, video). A7iii to be sold soon.

You can't go wrong with either of these amazing cameras. That said I went with the A7SIII for the no-crop 4K120, rolling shutter performance, and the ridiculous low light abilities. Clean video at 12, 800 ISO is something I didn't think was possible. Also it runs cool as a cucumber in almost any scenario and the EVF is like looking at real life but better. I certainty wouldn't mind 33MP though...

I want to get both cameras. I will be shooting 70% Video. 40% Photos. However, I will need to shoot two camera interviews. the smart thing is to get matching cameras. Have you used both cameras in two camera shoots? How do they match?

a7IV and A7SIII 4k video is pretty much the same, i feel like a lot of creators downplay cheaper cameras because their upset that it stacks up pretty well with the more expensive camera lol also with the crop in 4k 60 just get a wider lens, the 16-35 would be a 24-52.5 which is not bad at all. Or get the tamron 11-20mm f/2.8 (16.5-30)

4k crop wasn't a deal breaker at all, most of my clients won't care if it's crop or full lol. It's only us nerd that make a big deal out of it haha.

Thx for making this episode. Recalling your previous episode, you referenced that the 85mm/1.8 has fast AF for filming. Is it why you chose the 1.8 over the GM/1.4 and Sigma 85/1.4 strictly? I’m very curious. I’m sure the 1.8 is the better bang for the buck, but if money is no object, is the 85mm/1.8 still better GM/Sigma strictly for filmmaking? Thanks, Sidney!

I can’t stand to lose the breathing compensation, soft skin effect, direct live streaming with 1080 60p, new modes switching dial, flippy screen that won’t get loosen over time, APSC mode and animal eye autofocus in video under A7IV, if I switch over to Sony A7SIII.
