You need to know that the ground on the housing, does not have an insulator around it. What you are calling the ground, is the stator wire.

Is the field terminal the exciter connection?

could not figure out why my new alt wouldent start charging, put that exciter wire on and shit my pants when it worked

I take it you useing the battery to supply 12v power to the exciter termanal? You dont say that what your doing. But the exciter needs battery power to kick it in to charge. You can test it in the truck by unplugging the regulator an put a jumper wire from main battery an to the orange exciter termanal in the regulator plug conector.
