I've noticed that medieval Celtic skirmishers were witnessed to have used darts that were sometimes 7 feet long against enemies that wore padded linen armor, that was sometimes supplemented with chainmail. I've started to suspect that the clubs and cudgels they were known to carry may have doubted as spear throwers.

I am no closer to learning how to make one then I was before. I love how you went into lashing technique oh wait you didn't. At;east you showed us how to shape a head and add feather oh wait nope didn't do that either. Well you shaped the atlatl oh wait no you didn't. Well then you still showed me how to throw it oh wait no no you didn't. I learned as much from this as I did the documentary on early man that made me aware. The title should be history of the atlatl not how to make an atlatl because you didn't make one for us or teach anybody how to!

I've had a go at making very basic Atlati and dart. Even that had surprising amount of power. Very good informative video. Perhaps should have done a demo throw as part of your intro, so that people know exactly what your talking about.

Dart material can be had to come by. Not all places have the resources. Like many city dwellers, I use what is available at the hardware store; wooden dowels.

Jeff,

Hey you finally got the Pendleton style hat back on, looks better than the ball caps!

You should be on Dual Survival with Matt Graham, as he just made an Atlatl on the last episode, while in the field.

He was able to bag a wild pig!

It looks like you inhabit the desert areas surrounding Joshua Tree, and Twenty nine Palms area.

I am in Florida, the exact opposite of your area, but I have been in Joshua Tree several time during my travels.

Great to camp out there under the stars in the winter.

Thanks for all the videos.

Atlatl is a Nahuatl word meaning, literally, "extended arm or arm extender" in the same language, the atlatl dart is called; tlacochtli, personally think these artifacts to refer more generally, it would be more correct to call them, "propeller to javelin" or something similar, as atlatl refers to the model used by the Aztecs, but Recivier many to name throughout the world, and each had a ways or less specific to be done in each region and thus a woomera is a woomera and an atlatl an atlatl, such as an AK-47 is not the same as an M-16, but in essence it serves the same purpose, but I guess they have not survived many names traditional for this artifact

Two kinds of people making instructional videos on YouTube:

-Solid, reliable experts who know what they're doing by virtue of experience;

...and...

-Amateurs who are essentially just recording their early attempts, figuring it out as they go, while acting as if they're some kind of authority (This is MOST of what I find)

The best amateurs acknowledge their inexperience, and merely host while someone who knows what they're doing shows us how it's done.

Guide Fisher,

A most rudimentary statement of physics is that momentum is a product of mass and velocity.

Thanks for listening.
