American REACTS To Europe Cultural Differences | Moving Abroad Ep.28

I was suggested to watch @drewbinsky video: 18 cultural differences between the USA and Europe. After me being in Europe for nearly 1 year and traveling to 12 different countries I have seen and learned so much!

Culture shock is real for anyone traveling to a new place. No area of the world can be generalized, but this was a fun video and a good sense of what to expect when traveling or moving to Europe!

Thank you to Ursdaniel for the video recommendation!

In the West of Europe - biggest countries aka UK, Spain, Italy, France, Germany people DONT care about 2nd language ! most of them they dont know english...teens start to change that and plenty of them speak english nowadays...especially in the East, young people and middle agers speak ussualy more than 2 languages, sice most of them travel for work, like myself...because I am romanian, I am able to speak all latin related languages...italian ( best), spanish and french. even I understand german at some point...plus...hahaah! English which I loved it since childhood ( communist times) - Cheers

Americans when they think of Europe usually think of Western Europe, The east is its own thing, in some ways closer to the Americans, in that we are a bit wilder, more frontier-type people or the descendence of them, so the culture reflects that long time spent in small communities, an expectation of self-reliance and slight anarchistic tendencies. Partly why capitalism worked so well

In Berlin for example, you can find so many different opinions to go to an sports live event. It's not just football, we have basketball, volleyball, ice hockey, handball. People go there with a lot of passion, but also with their families or friends. I find our life in Europe for the most cases much more relaxed and it's not necessary that everything is 24/7 available. That system is responsible for a lot of waste.

Smocking in Europe is just smoking trust me and have absolutely nothing to do with fashion. People who smoke they just do because they want to.

The US is all about social status and social status is about job and money but job is mostly about money. That's the fundamental difference and what leads to the politics, the aggressivity and how conflictual the US is, the work work work, the education system, healthcare, the USA is #1 arrogance, the imperialism (military bases and corporate imperialism plus the need for an opponent, China nowadays, USSR in the past). Even the larger cars are in part a matter of social status and why folks spend more than they can afford on cars. People also tend to be early adopters of new things as they move quickly towards keeping up - sometimes that goes very wrong like with urban sprawling. Obviously it's also why corporations can exploit workers (long hours, little vacation), why crime rates are relatively high ( people are educated to take advantage of any opportunities and that can go too far). Even racism is propagated by segregation and segregation is mostly about social status. Anyway, that's the curse, the key problem and what needs to be fixed but the US is yet to figure that one out. Social status is why maybe some people back home might have felt hurt when you left the US, the US is supposed to be the greatest place so you are not supposed to want to go elsewhere and you kinda lower its social status by wanting to experience something else.
Another major difference is that, because of the EU, it's easier to move and have contact with other cultures so there are less conflicts - the internet achieves that to some extent too but the US kinda looks down on everyone (the USA #1 thing) so it's harder to get positive results in this direction.
Traditions are also more of a thing in Europe, older history and religion is overall less relevant and certainly less aggressive - Romania is supposed to be super religious but i'm sure nobody has harassed you about converting or anything.
Being more direct overall is another major difference. With major variations within Europe though- the Brits are quite very indirect and even in Romania, people can be very indirect about some things, quite direct about others. Actually, even generalizing to the entire Europe is a US specific thing, nobody else does it - it's a continent with 44+ nations and a lot more that that when it comes to cultures.
Oh and btw you do have an accent, US accent.

Smoking = cool? Really dude? :)) It may be more common in Europe than in America, but it's not cool. Smoking is banned in all indoors public spaces anywhere in the EU, so smokers always have to get out for a smoke. What's cool about that? Also, I don't have any smoking friends and I would never date a smoking girl lol, call me shallow but that's the truth :))
