Hi, I'm Daniel from Australia. I entered the DNA journey competition from momondo by having to answer the question "how you will open the world through travelling?".

I was luckily enough to win a DNA test kit and find out how diverse I am!

This is a video of me reacting to seeing where I am really from for the first time.

Thanks to momondo and AncestryDNA for the opportunity!

Sephardic Jews tend to be around 50% Italy/Greece and 50% West Asian. So your results make sense

While the Africa North is slightly underestimated in this test (can indeed appear as Italian, Iberian or Middle East), it is no surprise that you aren't more North African because North African Jews are more like European Jews (Ashkenazi and Sefardic): a mixture of Levantine (ancient Judean) + Southern European (Italian). This mix happened before the split of the Jewish diaspora (during Roman times most likely). North African Jews have an additional contribution from North Africans (Berbers) but it is minor (at most 15-20% in some Libyan Jews), comparable to the minor Iberian contribution in Sefardis or the minor Eastern European in some Ashkenazis.
So you're not exactly mixed as both your parents are Jewish and are genetically pretty much identical when it comes to the ancestral populations.
Mazel tov!

"European' Jewish DNA markers are different than any other european DNA. Some say jewish men from Israel/judea married european women (over 1500 years ago) when they were in diaspora, but other say the european component could also be original from Israel/judea being that their were cannanites/philistines who originated from europe or greece. DNA tests need to evolve more to compare to ancient bones. As far as your italy and middle eastern dna; it is common amongst mizrahi or sephardic jews who lived in these areas ; they did mix with local populations unlike the diaspora that went to europe who where mostly segregated from the locals.
