My guide dog is without a doubt the best thing to ever happen to me. She lives up to her namesake and teaches me patience every day. I love her to pieces and she gives me the independence and ability to travel freely in even the most complex environments. I wanted to take today to show you some of her many commands both in and out of harness. What are some other commands your dog or service dog knows?

Hello I am a guide dog puppy raiser in the UK. ie I take a puppy from 8 weeks old to 12 months or so until they go on for further training to be a guide dog. We do the basic training and socialisation of the puppy to make sure he/she is ready for the advanced training. It's a well worth project for anyone who might be thinking about it. Guide dogs for the blind are always looking for volunteers. The rough cost of a guide dog from birth to retirement at about 10 years old is £55, 000 around $70, 000. Lovely to see a guide dog at work. Good luck together.

I’m a year late to the comment party. However I had to say how cool it was to hear about the “keep in“, and “over“ guide commands. I have never heard of another GDB grad using these before, and I think that should be one of the things taught at every school. My school does not teach these, and I have had many situations where these commands would have been beneficial. I have been planning on it teaching my guides, these types of commands, although with different command words. I suppose though, that I have been focusing on other commands, like targeting. I really enjoyed this video. I don’t know why, but watching other handlers work their dogs, always seems to bring me quite a bit of enjoyment.

I currently legally blind, not totally blind, I have retina pigmentation, with about 45 percent vision, I have obscured tunnel vision, I am the process of obtaining a guide dog, I am lucky enough to be able to walk, stick in hand, wanted to say, that even after watching this first video, I have learned so much, thank you

I am from Belfast, and though most of the commands are the same, I’ve got a few new or different ones for you. My current dog is from a private trainer, but as I’ve always trained my own until this April, I’ve added my own commands as well as the standard ones.

Straight on: If I think the dog is veering, or if he goes around something. This tells him to maintain the straight line of travel.

Over left/right: This means to sidestep over to the left or right whilst maintinaing the same direction.

Wheels: Find the vehicle we came in.

Take me back: Go back to the place we started from, not necessarily via the same route. It doesn’t matter how he gets me back, as long as he does it. This is useful in shopping centres where I might visit several shops.

Kennel: go in the crate or go under the table, bench, etc.

Left/Right about: An about turn in either direction.

Wait: the same as stay, but don’t get comfy because we are moving soon. Used when waiting to exit a vehicle for example.

Easy: slow down.

Side: go from the left to the right side to work on that side.

Curl: curl up small under a seat or in front of a seat, such as on a plane.

Press: One I taught him, as I have two bad legs and a very interesting gait and often lean into the dog knocking him off the straight line of travel. I needed to teach him this command so that he knows he can be more assertive and push me, by pressing into my leg, to force me back onto the straight line.

Find the path/work it out: find a way through that obstacle/situation.

there are other commands he knows that are service dog related, as I have both PTSD and mobility disabilities, but as this video deals with guide dogs, I’ll leave those out. Incidentally, he is trained in both Irish and English.

I think Patience is being such a good girl, she follows your commands perfectly, and that's what I like about her!

Great video Tamara! Patience is an amazing guide dog! I can tell She’s very excited and focused on her job. What I love the most is when Patience is looking up at you, waiting for a command. It’s like She’s saying, “What do you need Mom? Or I’m ready whenever you are!” And congratulations on your 1, 000 subscribers milestone!

Patience is a great dog and you clearly both have a strong bond. My service dog Jack (70 pound chocolate lab) is trained differently but I have different needs. After my brain injury my blood pressure is the biggest concern. When we are out and about Jack's primary responsibility is peripheral vision and alerting me to things I might not see. When I over do and have to sit down and my blood pressure is elevated (jack can tell when that happens) he climbs up on my lap and won't move until my blood pressure drops back down to an acceptable level.

Hi Tamara. Great video. I am raising a guide dog puppy in the US. After watching your video I feel like I could be teaching her so much more. She has mastered the basics: sit, down, rest (stay), come, leave it, forward, hup-hup (pick up pace), easy (slow down pace), stop, load-up (get in car), she waits for ok to go to food dish, waits at door for ok to go through door, goes to her place on command. Have you any suggestions on what other training I could be doing? My pup is quite smart and likes to learn things. Thank you.

I’m Irish and it’s interesting that guide dog commands are exactly the same on this side of the Atlantic (except that we call a garbage can a bin!). One other useful command I use is “under the chair” which I use at meal times or in a restaurant. My dog is long and skinny so it’s easy enough for her to turn, back and lie down. It keeps her safe and I know if she wants to wander. Well done on the videos. They’re to the point and very much reflect my own experience.

Great video, Tamara! Thank you. I'm first-time raising guide-dog puppies and your video helps me understand how I can improve my puppies' training. Best wishes from South Africa.

Harley here - great stuff as always, Tamara. Patience is clearly of great benefit to you; I had no idea vision impairment assistance dogs could be quite this helpful in so many ways
I love how intuitive she is with things like "find the path" and how well trained she is to always stop and make sure you're aware of level changes and hazards. I'm so glad you have her

Anyway, all the best. Love, Harley

I really enjoyed this video seeing all the commands that your guy dog is trained to complete I’ve just been excepted to a guide dog school and this helps me understand what tasks I should ask to possibly add into the training program and it also help me envision what to expect and what to pay attention to in my own behavior as I’m walking for example like which foot is leading up and down the steps etc. thank you this was extremely helpful and I enjoyed each of your videos

Lovely video!!i had such fun watching. Patience is so cute I just want to give her a big hug. I’m also applying to a guide dog school and was wondering how do you teach new commands to your guide dog like I think follow command would be so helpful or find garbage or staires or door etc. This is going to be my first guide dog so I’m not sure how to train a dog to learn new commands. I think that would really help a lot of us if you made a video about that as well. I found it very educational and very interesting. Thank you for sharing.
