I miss when the History Channel had things to learn, not thoughts to discard.

I want to give History Channel a hug, it didn't deserve this fate.

As a Titanic buff I know something William Randolph Hearst did.
After the sinking of the Titanic, the president of the White Star Line J Bruce Ismay was among the survivors. Hearst upon hearing this went off on the biggest character assassination event of his life. Simply because he and Ismay didn't get along.

Ismay on the night of the sinking although maybe a little panicked helped as much as he could, bringing women and children to the boat deck to board lifeboats, trying to assist in any way possible. And when he had gotten into the lifeboat there was no one left on the surrounding deck, and since this was the 2nd to last lifeboat to leave (other than the two collapsibles on the roof) he had thought most of the passengers were off, and he was allowed to step into the lifeboat by the officer in charge First Officer Murdoch.

When William Randolph Hearst heard of Ismay's survival he got to work instantly, since he was in charge of most news companies in the United States in every publication he made sure to depict Ismay as a coward. I think one of his publications lied saying he disguised himself as a woman to get aboard a boat, but I am not going to state that as fact. Some of the tactics in stirring up hatred of the public was showing some cartoons about it, one of which showed a list, on the left: the lost, showing well known people who died on Titanic. On the right: the saved, ONLY Ismay. Yellow Journalism at it's finest.

This press worked and it didn't help a passenger mistook a conversation Ismay had with the captain during Titanic's voyage as pressuring for more speed and testified as such.

This bad press ruined Ismay in the states. But before this he was already a husk of a man because of the Titanic disaster. The bad press didn't help him. He went back to Ireland and resigned from President of the White Star Line, only staying in the company to help settle lawsuits from Titanic. He became a bit of a hermit living in the Irish countryside and avoided any talk about Titanic. At one point a family member naively asked Ismay if he had been in a shipwreck, He replied that he did, "I was on a ship thought to be unsinkable." That was all he said.
I can't find this so I cannot get the direct quote so take this with a pinch of salt. In his later years Ismay was asked if he still liked ships, and his reply was that he still did but he wishes to never see another one as long as he lives. He died in the 1930's, his reputation never recovered from his survival of the Titanic.

Today movies even still show Ismay wrong, mostly due to William Randolph Hearst. Even Titanic 1997, in which James Cameron tried his hardest to make the movie as historically accurate as he could.

I feel this so much. I was in jail last October and I haven’t watched actual television in years. The pod I was in had it on Discovery channel after chow and I thought “this should pass time painlessly.” Ghost Hunters followed by In Search Of Bigfoot. I know History Channel is the subject, but same concept.

I would absolutely watch an entire docuseries on the Mongolian Empire in the vein of classic History Channel series.

I just realized that I was alive during pre-Disney History Channel and I remember watching something about WW2 or something that brought up that one German guy with my dad when I was really young...that sure was a memory.
