You should watch his video about the brushes he uses. he uses only a few textured brushes per painting (the “cat scratches”), but overall he uses a lot of different textures in his art as a whole.

I think Sam's is better. These random lines makes the art look spontanious which is very unique in my opinion. The rendering is also somehow cleaner. I don't know how he does that but it's amazing. You did a great job, too, it's just I personally like his more.

When doing a study, I like to make the sketch as detailed as I can (with a singular color/brush of course), so I can focus on their technique when it comes to the colored version

Tracing is fine if you use it just for practice and never claim the finished product as your own. That usually means either:
- don’t post it online (keep it to yourself as a sketching practice)
- be extremely vocal about who made the original (like this short did)

I actually recently traced my favroite artist, because i want to learn theyre style and theyre very good at drawing muscles. So I did a few warm ups by getting the genreal ans basic shapes of how they draw a muscular build. They did my own without any traveing what so ever and did notice it was a lot easier to draw a musclar build
