Oltrarno Florence Travel Guide - Walk and Explore the Other Side of the Arno River in Italy!

Said to be the funky sibling of the historic centre of Florence, the Oltrarno’s densely packed streets are lined with restaurants, cafes, shops, churches, palaces, museums and gardens! Today, we will walk to the neighbourhood's most famous landmarks and show you how to navigate your way around the other side of the Arno river, beginning at Ponte Vecchio. Oltrarno Florence Travel Guide w/ @michaworldwide

The Arno River divides Florence’s historic centre from its vibrant neighbourhood on its southern banks. The Oltrano, literally meaning ‘the other side of the Arno’, started out as a small unprotected settlement, however, over time it grew into one of the more affluent areas where nobles built their palaces. The Oltrarno district is made up of the neighbourhoods of San Niccolò, Santo Spirito, and San Frediano!

The first time I went to Piazzale Michelangelo it was a sweaty, August climb up the hill. The second time I made the trip, I took a bus. Definitely made the ascension easier!
And back down in Oltrarno, art lovers MUST visit the Brancacci Chapel in Santa Maria del Carmine for the Massacio frescoes. An admission fee charged, and at last visit, reservations required. The birth of humanism in eclesiatic art.

This is a great video. I spent a month in Florence last April when my daughter was studying abroad there. I worked remotely and rented an AirBnB apartment only a block from the Arno, near the Uffizi gallery. Oltrarno quickly became one of my favorite places to go, and like you I spent many hours wandering around and taking in the incredible views. There's also a great area in Oltrarno north of the Ponte Vecchio that has a bunch of great bars, I discovered that my last night there and had a fantastic time. Can't wait to come back.

Beautiful video but I do miss your food tasting videos. You could combine them with the history/art tours. Even though I live in Italy it's just so much fun to watch. Hope you make more of those. 😄

Your days as tour guides were not wasted. Nice job! One thing I learned in Tuscany in Rada at the Castello di Albola winery is that authentic Chianti Classico that has met the requirements for Chianti will always have a Black Rooster on the label. Originally the Black Rooster was a symbol of the Military League of Chianti. For the last 300 years it became more of a symbol of the region for wine in Chianti and certain requirements of grapes and purity before it can have the Black Rooster on the label to be certified Chianti Classico wine.

Yup, it is a hard clime but. I consider it a challenge, I've been doing it from 1978 and still doing it today . BTW global expats, even though I've been traveling longer than you
both have been alive, I still learn many things from you !
