💬 Nvidia CEO recently said some interesting things in an interview, how people should no longer learn to code because AI will allow anyone to become a programmer using natural language.
Is that what will happen? Or is it still valuable to learn programming?

"Nobody has to program and the programming language is human"

Learning a programming language is so far from what programmers bring to the table, they are engineers. The language has nearly nothing to do with it. English has all the words a doctor needs to describe medicine, but knowing English does not make you a doctor.

Telling people not to learn how to code and instead rely on AI to do it for them is a perfect sales pitch for a CEO of a company that requires people to use AI as a product. It's basically like telling children not to learn how to read because AI is capable of turning text into a sound clip for them. If people know how to code and create their own solutions, then he has less people who have to rely on his company's product and services.

Never trust anyone who tells you not to invest in your own education and personal growth. No product or service will ever replace your ability to think and come up with solutions for yourself.

It's like the CEO of a repair shop says you shouldn't learn how to repair cars

I'm not worried because the CEO of Nvidia is just trying to sell a product

if you not a programmer you cannot find the issue when AI make a mistake

Not a doomsday person, but as a developer who has worked a lot with AI over the last 7 years I can say for certain that AI is already beginning to take jobs, and reduce new job openings. We are seeing the beginning of the next industrial revolution and things are about to get wild in a way that capitalism is not prepared to deal with.

That seems like such a bad stance to take publicly, even if he thinks it's true.

All he is telling people is "I am going to replace my coders with AI", because he cannot see the future better than anyone else, it's just his personal take. Who in their right mind would go work for him now? And all the programmers who do, are probably scrambling for the door.

"AI will replace programmers"
Is like saying "calculators will replace mathematicians"

They said that by now there would be no more workers, that robots would make food, that we'd be living on mars by now, what else? Robot x human war, matrix style? People love to predict (and fail miserably doing so).

Guy is just trying drive hype and raise his stocks.

if,
we are talking about the future,
+ ai can continue to learn
+ ppl keep throwing money into ai tech
+ human are lazy
= eventually there will be one day that ppl will use ai to code everything.

then yes, the CEO is right.

So more than 20 years ago, programming was completely replaced by model based development where customers would just model their procedures and business-logic and the code would be auto-generated and programmers were no longer required.
There were also rapid prototyping environments and UI editors build specifically so non-programmers could build UIs.

Well, shorty after that, people noticed that instead of "accurately describing technical processes", business-people prefered to "no so accurately describe technical processes" to programmers who would then "accurately describe technical processes" usually in languages made for telling computers exactly what to do.

So let's see how well AI will replace programmers by allowing non programmers to "accurately describe technical processes".

10 years ago Geoffrey Hinton told people not to become radiologists since AI would soon "solve" that problem. It continues to be one of the most lucrative and lifestyle friendly careers in medicine - in part because many people were scared away from it then.

Bear in mind that radiology is a narrow domain problem with highly specified/fixed requirements and tons of data / financial backing. And yet it is still not solvable to an accurate enough degree without humans in the loop.

It is childs play compared to creating functional, extensible and maintainable programs.

I hope the same happens here as I enjoy my job security. 😜

My favorite example is how SQL is basically a natural language already, but it still takes some skill to really master the logic behind effective data manipulation. Learning to code was never about the syntax.

I recently asked an A.I. for help with some code. I know how to program in many programming languages but I can't memorize every API and every feature of every platform. The A.I. told me a lot of information that looked good... about functions that don't exist and constants that don't exist. Who is it that will train the A.I. to know how to program? And this isn't even close to designing an entire system or just a simple app.

Once upon a time, there was an Accountant.
When calculators arrived, the Accountant was still there.
When spreadsheets emerged, the Accountant was still there.
When specialized accounting software appeared, the Accountant remained.
Long live the Accountant! :)

Although I disagree with NVidia's CEO (I'm also biased, making games for over 20 years now :-) ), I can imagine a future where you have "virtual employees" in your company. A virtual "gameplay programming department" for instance. And everyone is a "game director" saying what they want to achieve. Scary :-)

I still had to learn calc even though machines are great at solving calc problems. It's not about doing the work but understanding what is going on and how to use it.

I remember asking multiple text based AIs to make me a basic lit sprite shader and every single one failed. Kept giving errors and went through at least 10 cycles each time of failing to fix errors before I gave up.

Went on google for five minutes and found out how to make one myself, and made one myself.

The director of NVidia was simply blown away by the inflated share price. It is necessary to understand to whom and when he said it, that is, to know the context, and then this statement will not be so loud.
