A theory I like is that both mrs Lovat and her twin sister knew about the other world, but somehow only the twin decided to stay forever and got trapped, so mrs lovat never saw her sister come back to the real world, hence why she thinks it's dangerous for children. Seing her sister never came back she understood it was a sort of trap

The reason the doll looks like Coraline is because the og doll (the one that looked like the missing sister) was in the trunk, before the other mother sensed a new child to lure into her web, and changed the doll to fit her appearance, before sending it back. Then Wybie found it, and gave it to Coraline.

I wonder why her sister was taken and not her? Maybe grandma was the favorite of the two to their parents for whatever reason and her sister felt left out. She was miserable while grandma was being noticed and loved by her parents hence why the Beldam chose her. Once she went missing, the family probably moved away after failed attempts of trying to find her sister and they wanted to move away from the place that brought them grief. As grandma got older, she never forgot about her lost sister and hopes that she’d find her around that area some day or she’d turn up. She doesn’t like renting the pink palace to people with kids because maybe she sensed that only bad things happen to kids there.

It’s explained that she IS the grandmas twin sister, and the doll was hers. Thus why it was built like her, in order to build a hidden camera for the bell dam to spy through. I don’t think the bell dam can make an area outside of the house, because as we see in the movie the world is confined to the house. And I think the only reason that is, is because she’s familiar with the house and it’s layout. Besides, it would be hard to make a kid jump out of bed and go all the way to another house to go through a little door. So no, I don’t think the grandma purposely let Coraline live there at the pink palace as a sacrifice, because as long as wybie didn’t live there he had no chance of being hunted by the bell dam. Also, the grandma probably only let them move in because she either A: was running out of money
B: someone moved out or it was not vacant for a very long time C: she finally decided to let go of her superstitions of her missing sister and the house and gave kids a chance
Or D: some of all of the above.

For people who don’t know I’m a huge fan of coraline so the doll coraline got that looks exactly like her is a doll The other mother sent to spy on her, .when coraline went into the other world the other mothers plan was to trap her with the ghost children and keep sending gifts and dolls but coraline was smart and the mothers weakness is games she plays mind tricks on little kids that go into her world so she can trap them
