What is DHCP?

Because IP addresses are managed and allocated by your internet service provider (ISP), your computer’s IP address will generally change depending on how you are connected. Frequently for computers that only act as clients IP address are only provided when a machine connects to the internet. Your computer probably obtains an IP address this way on campus, using a protocol called the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP). If you use a wireless router at home, it probably hands out private IP addresses in the same way.

Lol I went to UB and connected to that very network :D

Also, thank you for mentioning that clients typically use DHCP while servers are assigned a static IP address, i.e. one that doesn't change so that clients can find it.

Question for you. Are you familiar with using Wireshark? Can you cover a topic a such as "How to find an ARP traffic within the packet dump and ensure the correct dissector is applied to it." Also if I was to "sniff" on a host-only network, NAT network and a bridged network, would I have to use a virtual machine such as VMware to do this if I was trying to do this only on my computer or to get the different networks?
