The world's first successful whole eye transplant was completed in May of 2023. A large group of surgeons carried out a face and total eye transplant on Aaron James, marking a historic milestone in medical science and organ transplantation. They were successful at integrating the blood vessels and the optic nerve of the donor eye to Aaron. Can he see out of it? Unfortunately not, but they have confirmed the brain is receiving electrical signals from that eye.

It'll take between 5 to 25 years, to know if it worked, that's how long it takes for the body to completely fuse nerves of communications from eye to brain.

The fact that it’s even possible to connect a foreign organs particularly something as sensitive as an eye without rejection is beyond amazing!

As a veterinarian who’s surgically removed more than a few eyes, this baffles me. All the nerves and blood vessels come through this tiny hole way back in the eye socket and there is literally no room to work at all. What an amazing feat of science this is.

Everyone’s praising the eye surgery but I’m equally as impressed as to how his face still looks almost COMPLETELY normal after having 3/4 of it entirely blown off

Imagine the first thing his new eye sees is the medical bill, jokes aside it is truly amazing

Just the fact they could reattach his optic nerve alone is amazing

I've seen some interviews with him. Guy has no fear. He was all for them just trying as an experiment hoping to help others in the future. A rare amazing person.

Hey that's Dr. Eduardo Rodriguez, my doctor! He fixed my severely deviated septum. For the first time in 40 years, I can breathe normally with my nose. My right nasal passage was nearly completely blocked. Awesome doctor.

I’m more impressed at the face graft. He looked like a ghoul, and doctors were able to repair that. That’s mind blowing to me. Medicine is truly astounding.

Just to clarify. It was an electricity line that he got caught on while working that caused his injuries.

Nurse: “Doctor do you think this will work?”

Doc: “I guess we’ll see.”

My wife is an Australian nurse and some of the surgeons that I have been able spend time getting to know are absolutely amazing. My mother is a retired laboratory analyst and the physicians I have met through her years of work also brilliant. The surgeons don't get enough credit. Just brilliant

Listen his face transplant is INSANE.
Even if he can’t see through the eye, his face looks amazing.

I'm not surprised he can't see. First time procedures are rarely perfect, but this Aaron and the surgical team have layed the ground work that will benefit future generations.

Imagine him waking up one day, when the nerves finally wipl connect 100% and he will be able to see through that eye. Amazing!

If one day his new eye starts to eye, that’ll be an amazing achievement

Just being able recconect the eye and it not being rejected, its a huge step, i hope this leads to eventually being able to regain at least a little bit of sight trough surgerys

As a person who almost lost an eye due to an accident & had it salvaged by an amazing surgeon, I was scared to click on this. How... on Earth... did they reattach *ALL* of that complicated, unique tissue types including *the optic nerve.* Eye surgery is a special kind of hell & has a long recovery period measured often in years if not a minor procedure. My vision didn't come back all at once after my surgery but did quite well for many years. I'm hopeful this man's vision will begin to come in. That would truly be miraculous.
