If you're not familiar with am airport, let ground know. Anytime I have, they've been more than helpful.

Also, right after I got my instrument rating, ATC was pretty easy on me in actual IMC.

ATC are not traffic cops, they really want to see you arrive in one piece.

As a student pilot, 19 years old and 100 miles from home, ATC pulled a fast one on me on my first straight in approach at OSU airport, switching my rented C-150 to a very short 9L after I was all set up on nice long 9R. I ended up doing an emergency go-around and nearly ended up in the tree tops because my carburetor heat affected engine power that I forgot to shut off because of all the confusion. I did not ask for permission for a go around...….rather I told them on the radio what I was doing after I was doing it. Lived to tell about it 40 years later.
