I like to this a bit differently. I need some more support under my back - so besides my hands i often put some folded t-shirt or other cloth under my lumbar. Then i lift my elbows up, brace core, lift my shoulder blades off the floor with the head still being on floor and only when my shoulder blades are not touching the floor (barely) anymore i lift the head slightly. seems very effective to me, but adequate support under lumbar is very important - depends on your natural curves and the size of your hands if you might need to have additional support.

Head position was totally wrong. As per Dr McGill, just raise your head enough to make a weight scale 0.
