Retinal repair: Bringing stem cells into focus

Показать описание
The retina is the eye’s most sophisticated component. Researchers are developing techniques to recreate retinal tissues — and even entire retinas — in the lab. These complex structures can then be transplanted into patients and could help to restore lost vision in people affected by diseases such as age-related macular degeneration.

Every single presentation ever done on vision cures uses the phrase "one day" or "someday". Hopes dashed once again. Thanks.

This must also have implied benefits for those who suffer from a broad range of Glaucoma conditions. I hope these trials are successful.

After all those years there's still no update of the current state of findings. Why can't experts in this field just summarize the current state of reseach? Is there anything going ahead? If not, why? What are remaining problems? etc.

I think most retina diseases result in scar tissue? Can stem cells replace healthy cell types and destroy the scar tissue? It won't replicate scars will it?

Good info, too much punnage (or whatever the correct term is for the constant over-referencing to sight/seeing).

I was diagnosed with a very rare eye disease called choroideremia. Due to the disease I am now almost completely blind. The only site I have remaining is in my left eye. And what I see is like looking through a straw. Gene therapy is no option for me. I'm told the only hope for me is stem cell therapy.and that trials will not begin to take place within the next 5 to 10 years.I fear by then I will lose all vision that I have remaining. At this point I no longer know where to turn for help and I am beginning to slowly lose hope.

How have these trials progressed for advanced diabetic retinopathy?

So just to be clear, this method could actually cure any form of blindness someday? Say perhaps like a big gap in the middle?

I got hit in the open eyeball with a paintball.. it sent a shockwave through the liquid in my eye and bent my retina on a microscopic scale…
Fucked me up.. I see like a funhouse mirror in one eye.. it ruined a very promising military career, ended my boxing career.. (I’m Irish American and was golden glove) and now if you want to beat me in a fight, just keep circling to your right and the right hand will connect to my left eye because I have a blind spot on that side..
went to Mayo Clinic for days and after being poked and prodded for days, the doctor stuck out his hand, wished me luck and said there’s nothing they could do about it and I need to take care of my right eye.. lol
Wtf??!
