I'm going on 30 years as a Lineman... So I will be one of those open positions needing filled when I retire. It is an incredible career! If you have the drive and passion, you can go far. If you don't particularly like hard physical work... You probably would want to find something else. You get out of it what you put into it. I have made an outstanding living financially from this job. Pay attention, your reputation is everything, especially as an apprentice. Don't be "that guy". Be the one they can rely on. Good luck!

There is no shortage of linemen. Go ahead and try to get into the field and see how extremely competitive it is be most people don’t get in. Even these guys this linemen school aren’t guaranteed any job after they finish, just 20k of debt if you wasn’t in the military.

In school for it now, it’s incredibly complex and hard work but super rewarding, can’t wait to move up the ranks, best job ever!

I’ve been a wiremen apprentice for 2 years and I’m switching gears to the line side. Im excited, I originally interviewed when I was getting out of active duty and didn’t get in the first time. Got picked up for wiremen but I still wanted to go the line route so interviewed again with my local. Just got notification that I’m going to our locals boot camp.

I will say military folks do really well within the IBEW from what I have seen.

50% washout rate I’m guessing means 50% of the apprentices don’t last in the trade?

I am a cdl driver and I delivered a load to the lazy q ranch and seeing them train made me want a career change. If all goes well I will be starting NLC lineman school on September 25th

After my Navy time I plan to avoid signed several year contracts, does this program involve such a contract? It seems too good to be true it's a great opportunity.

Hey man just curious is nlc worth it and is it required for work in California? I have a family member with a pole set in his yard to teach people (he’s been saying don’t go to the school and get a foot in the door at a utility then transfer to line once in) so I’ve been climbing on that and studying the “lineman and cablemans hand book” by Thomas m shoe maker. Also a couple of electrical theory books I have from my inside wireman schooling.

What a fantastic opportunity and exit strategy for vets transitioning from the armed forces. Did a quick check re money and it is not too shabby at all.

Realistically how long does it take to become an adequate climber? I’m sure some people pick it up faster than others.

They were heroes because they served our country… they continue to serve, as heroes, doing what most can’t or won’t. A focused and physically taxing job where there is no margin for error.
