As a wargamer, my list would be different than yours, as you acknowledged. That said, it's a good list with some outstanding games on it. Coincidentally, GMT announced in their last update a list of their top 15 All-Time Best Sellers. There is quite a bit of crossover between yours and that list, which I think speaks to the quality and not just the popularity of those games. Kudos.

Eurogamers really need to check out the COIN series. I like Cuba Libre (especially as an introduction to the series). It may be a stretch, but I think those games share some DNA with games like Cosmic Encounter.

GMT doesn't get enough love from reviewers, especially SUSD. Their experimental stuff like "Gandhi" needs more hype too.

You need to do an updated one of this list, Tom; they have released so many great games since! For me, GMT = Quality.

I just discovered GMT. Me and my wife played the base game of memoir 44 9 years ago. I decided to buy the expansions this Christmas. Which led me to discovering the commands and colors series and GMT. I'll be picking up a different commands and colors title at some point.

A great list considering Tom isn't a heavy war gamer but my war victory cigar fell out of my mouth when I realized that Fire In The Lake wasn't in the top 10.

Appreciate the coverage of these Tom, and the pace of delivery was good as well. Top ten list in 10 minutes..

Yeah the coin series is amazing an no more complex than some fantasy flight titles and less complex than TI3 . I really think
It's the next evolution of wargames

My immediate instinct was to complain that Dominant Species was much too low at #6 on this list...but after seeing the 5 games above it....I can't do that. GMT has has some great games in their line!

I pretty much fell out of buying new wargames after AH died until I discovered GMT about 5 years ago, then came to realize that war-boardgaming DIDN'T die in 1998. Trying to catch up now but wow! the cost compared to the 20th C. $200 for 1 game vs buying 4 or 5 games for that just 20 years ago. Anyway, really appreciate this review.

FAB: The Bulge, Andean Abyss, Sekigehara, No Retreat. I also have FAB: Sicily & FAB: Golan '73, but I still haven't played them, yet. GMT Games makes so many great games.

Nice list Tom, I am on the opposite of you as I am a War-game reviewer. But you do have a nice list. I think that Napoleonics scores a little higher to me than ancients.

I have too many GMT games I love and out of the 20 games I own I have never been disappointed. My current favorite is Fire In the Lake. This game teaches history and is more of a political game than a war game. I would be curious as too Joe Stedman's top 10 GMT games

Given how much Tom has enjoyed Root, it would be interesting to see how he would approach one of the COIN series. With that said, I don't know how much any of the settings would appeal to him

It's a heavy wargame but I've been playing...and enjoying...Empire of the Sun. Even veteran wargamers find this heavy.

The Coin Series from GMT is tremendous and covers many counter-insurgency conflicts from the Cuban Revolution to the present day war in Afghanistan. The first game in the series, Andean Abyss covers the Columbian Drug War. You can also play Ancient Warfare with A Falling Sky and Pendragon, the Viet Nam conflict with Fire in the Lake, the aforementioned A Distant Plain which covers Afghanistan, Liberty or Death which deals with the American Revolution, Colonial Twilight which games the French-Algerian War, Cuba Libre which as I said, covers the Cuban Revolution. Gandhi which deals with Gandhi's struggle against the British Raj. Future titles include All Bridges Burning which is the Finnish Civil War and China's War which covers the Japanese invasion of China before and during World War II, Also, People Power Counter-insurgency in the Philippines. These games are very deep and extremely fascinating! Play them you will love them and you will learn from them!!

When I first got into board games (again) I was drawn to the miniatures and fancy stuff too. Fantasy flight extracted quite a bit of cash!
Happily my tastes are pretty broad. I still love a plat Descent and still love Gears of War but GMT games have now become major component of my collection. Twilight Struggle, C and C Ancients, Colonial Twilight, Sekigahara.... I could go on. The depth of play in these games rewards repeated play and testing of new strategies. Don’t just be drawn to beauty. Too often it’s only skin cult of the new eh?

No 1960: The Making of the President? I feel Tom has talked very highly of that in the past
