For everyone who is having this issue with genuine airpods like me let me explain how I fixed it. I don't know if it happened because I changed the name or after I tried connecting it to my pc but either way this is how I fixed it. First I powered off my phone and reset the airpods by holding the button till it flashed red. Then I reconnected them to the phone as if it was brand new. This fixed the "cannot verify" issue for me but the touch controls weren't working. It is kind of finicky so if you get to this point just keep trying. For me I opened the case, went to Bluetooth settings, pressed connect even though they were connected, then pressed the (i) and it started showing touch controls again. One thing you can also try is validating the date if bought it from another retailer by going to the check coverage apple page, putting in the serial number and then can enter the date you purchased it. Half of these steps probably aren't necessary but its what fixed it for me.

Okay I found a solution!!! Go to accommodation should be off- custom audio- make sure to use the lowest and all version 1. It worked for me and I hope it does for you too 💙💙

I have two airpods. The one is ori and other is fake. This fake airpods previously already connect to ios 15 and i update to ios 16. On ios 16 is still detect as airpods ori, when im forget device this airpods kw and then reconnect, my airpods kw has detect as non genuine airpods wkwk. So if you already connect from ios 15, dont to forget device your airpods kw.

It's nothing complicated.. just open the box, don't take the buds outside. Long press the switch behind the box. Then once the message show in screen click don't connect. Thats it then it will show connected. Don't do anything else.. just press that don't connect
