Pharrell Williams dubbed T.I. "Jay-Z of the South," and considering the exceptional talents he has displayed during his developing career in the music industry, it is clear that he fully meets the requirements for such a designation. T.I., who was born Clifford Joseph Harris Jr. in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 25, 1980, has been rapping since he was just nine years old. At the age of just 19, he then secured a contract with LaFace Records, a division of Arista Records. Out of respect for fellow rapper Q-Tip, who also joined the company as a recording artist, he later changed his stage name from T.I.P., a play on his boyhood nickname Tip, to T.I. Upon its release in October 2001, "I'm Serious," his debut album, did fine, breaking into the top 30 of the Billboard Top R&B Hip-Hop charts and causing people to start paying attention. But soon after, this young rapper made the decision to stop working together with the label and start his own music label, Grand Hustle.
