Thank you for talking about this topic! People tend to overreact whenever the see the slighest bit of rounding, even if its upper back.

Notice how it's almost always beginners that freak out when someone deadlifts with a slightly rounded back

You’re right. Trainer’s eating his words now, huh? 🤣

The rounded back also helps with lat engagement I feel, I think thats why people round their backs when chinups get too heavy

Night and day difference when i started allowing my upper back to round more. Feels great and my lower back pain is gone.

Some people are simply not physiologically built to deadlift with a totally straight back. Like you said if I go 100% flat back I am basically squatting the weight.
You kind of just instinctively know if you’re getting sloppy with it at a certain point because when you fail to evenly distribute the force of the weight through your core your erector spinae muscles feel like they will explode.

I remember what Justin say or at least to me
"Don't assume that you know better because biomechanics is different for everyone"

A combination of training neutral and rounded stability is extremely healthy and smart for bulletproofing your back.

Had the same issue, at one point I felt like I was squatting the weight and not deadlifting it.

Honestly this helps a lot I round abit before the lift cause of my injured shoulder but it’s most comfortable to me I went from 135-315 for 5 and I make sure if it’s not a good day I go light or if my form starts to feel off I drop but thanks Justin keep it going love the content❤

Many power lifters lift woth a rounded back. What i heard is that you must not flatten the back due to the lift. As long as you keep your back in the same position/bend during the lift and keep the tension its safe. Only when folding and unfolding the back it increases the risk of disc injuries and stuff. Rounding the back helps with decreasing the lever a bit which makes the movement a little easier allowing to use a little more weight.

Solid advice if implemented consciously.

There’s a difference between having the upper back slightly rounded and having hunched over broke back mountain form, and I think most beginners won’t be able to tell the difference - hence it’s better to tell them to keep their back straight/tight and head up.

A rounded back can be fixed with core engagement

Can definitely deadlift safely with a rounded back, but notice the round comes from the thoracic spine and up. Your lower back in for the most part neutral (maybe a slight round, but that’s perfect)
