So to put it in perspective:
First the Earth was flat.
Then Alien pirates hollowed out the inside.
Then they used the cosmic bicycle pump and inflated it. (We are still in phase 3 so it's still expanding.)
Once done, phase 4 will be they'll hide their ill-gotten gains inside the Earth

This was actually proposed as a scientific hypothesis back before the Theory of Plate Tectonics was developed. One famous adherent was Bruce Heezen, who took the sonar measurements used to create the first complete map of the ocean floor, which actually led to this hypothesis being thrown out.

He was so sure that this hypothesis was correct that when Marie Tharp, who was actually making the map based on his measurements, pointed out that there was a rift valley down the center of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, which challenged this hypothesis, he called her findings "girl talk" and told her to redo her calculations. She did, and the rift was still there, laying the foundation for Harry Hess's work on Sea-Floor Spreading, which in turn led to the Theory of Plate Tectonics.
