I would be interested to see you give consideration to flexible shields and their performance. The Ottoman, Persian and Central Asian tradition of shield made of wicker wrapped tightly with silk (though with a steel central boss) deserve attention in the context of lighter shields and their development. And again the development of flexible and resilient surfaces. Examples of the type of shield I'm talking about can be seen here:
Flexibility. Flexibility. Flexibility. What does it tell us?

Thank you VERY MUCH for this video, gentlemen. Basicaly whole early slavic reenactment/living history community here in CZE is using boss held shields with steel umbo while there is probably no evidence, no archeological find as a template for these shields in our territory. Few archeological finds (Lenzen) and some notes tells us they were probably using different type of shield and it becomes my personal obsession so I am very grateful for any information.

Since the comments are deactivated on part two I‘m gonna ask this question here: The weaving pattern you discuss around 1:40 looks to me like it‘s skipping to the fourth hole, not the third. I might be wrong, miseinterpreting the pattern or something like that since I can‘t look at the original but if you follow the fiber you‘re using as an example, at the edge of the shield there is a „ghost line“ going all the way to the fourth hole....But as I said, unable to take a look at the original I could be wrong about that

The reason we harvest bark in the Spring is because the sap is high which makes stripping the bark easy. In the heat of Summer and the cold of Winter the sap is low and the bark pulls tight to the tree. If you try to harvest bark then it doesn't work. Thank you for an excellent presentation.

I’m a man of simple tastes. I see a Dimicator video and I press like.

Considering this shield and other ancient shield find are suggesting a thickness of 5-7mm, is there potential for some shrinking to have occurred during their preservation? I mean, that is it possible they were slightly thicker (7-10mm for example) and that the conditions that allowed the wood to be preserved has affected the thickness?

Very interesting stuff, if I had to guess I would say that the soft edge was there for decoration purposes.

I'm curious, Roland, since Ingo indicated the process for getting the bindings was best done in the Spring, does that mean the shields made with these bindings would be initially used for the following year's campaigning season?

Do they think that it might have had some kind of covering, rawhide, parchment etc. on the front or back?

Looks like somebody has bought or looted a shield, decided it was too small, and made an additional rim out of bast for it.

Where can I find more information on the shields featured in the video? I'd love to learn more about them.

Since you cut off comments in part 2. I will put my question(s) here. Is it possible that the "plant material" was some form of dimming that had, over time, flatten out? Or was used as a sort of "shock absorber" to keep the opponent's sword from biteing into the edge?

I have read that romans used shields made of woven reeds soaked in water to make them heavier as a training tool. Could this shield be something similar? Or am i barking up the wrong tree?

Please reupload the i33 footwork video that is now removed from your playlist, I think it is listed as i33 footwork part 1 or part 2, a video that teaches crossing step or flanking step.

So.... this might be a stupid question, but why do we think this object is a shield rather than - say - a plank-bottomed basked smooshed flat? Find context? The rivets?

I'm not disputing your analysis - just curious if there's more information.
