The reason why it was taking up so much RAM was because you were using ZFS, that file system is RAM heavy and combined with GNOME it takes up a bunch of RAM. Also ermine is actually pronounced ur-men, it's related to the weasel.

Thanks for the review. Could you touch on other subjects while reviewing the new releases, besides upgraded packages view or themes/looks. What about system improvents, like factory reset, atomic upgrades/ rollback? Mobile companion integration and syncing files between distros out of the box? These are badly overlooked among distro reviewers, and its a shame that nobody even talks about it. Thanks

Thanks Derek for this quick view to ubuntu 19.10.. I tryed too but without install, because I need a system can boot on pc to see the old network name (but this is pointless for now 😁) however I read the changes log and finally glad to see zfs on workstation 😊👏👏👏 this was bring my super attention.. I use zfs on my nas with nas4free and I love the way is used (old version of zfs, maybe 5, but excellent).

Cheers

13:14 You have to keep in mind that ZFS is really really really resource hungry.

You know, it's weird, I'm starting to hate Gnome less, the more I am exposed to it. It's strange-looking, but simple...not so different from Mac OS really, just arranged differently. In that sense, the transition from Windows would not be so different now than it was for people moving from the Windows XP desktop to Gnome 2. And take it from me, that move was an eye-opening experience.

I hope that one day there will be a DistroTube Distro (DTD). :D

GNOME Tweaks 3.34.0 should be automatically installed. This gives you, the Yaru Dark Theme and of course other tweaks. Use the Software Update and under search use "GNOME Tweaks"

Ubuntu should consider making a separate minimal iso so people with limited bandwidth can install the minimal iso and get it done without going over the limit

Thank you, Derek. I have been looking for a workable ZFS since it came out on Solaris in 2005 or so. But it seems like it will still be a while.

The reason why Gnome uses a lot of ram is because most components of the Gnome shell are cached in ram so it runs muchs faster than when it has to be run from disk. So most ram usage is cache. In a way that is good, ram is fast and if you have a lot of it, than why not use it at the max.

17:45 Of course there is no way to change the theme, that's Gnome... The least customizable desktop environment... You'll need Gnome Tweaks or tons of extensions to change the way it looks and/or behaves. By default, GNOME lacks basic settings and customizability, so you can't get much.

Calculator and Htop as snap. I heard Chromium disappeared from the repos and became only installable as a snap too. Sounds like it's Ubuntu / Canonical's new strategy, relying more and more on snaps and promote it as an Ubuntu standard way of doing things. Well, they'll have to work a lot on the snap's speed at startup if they want us to love it. I personally only use snap for one application that I use almost every day and that is not available on any repo or as a flatpak. Otherwise it's still and always will be the official repos first and flatpak if not available in the repos, or AUR if I'm on an Arch based system

Gnome theming isn't that standard and Ubuntu don't push it, so you need to install gnome-tweaks. The other tools you've seen from the search were from mate and other distributions.
It is sad they don't customize the gnome settings app to explose this setting since they ship not only their black and white theme, but also an all white and an all white variant.

ZFS does use a lot of RAM for cache. If you choose to use ZFS you should likely be on a desktop with several drives and lots of RAM. It would be ideal if you had 3-8 HDD's and you setup zraid. Or perhaps 2 HDD's mirrored via ZFS and bootable. You could use ZFS with dual M.2 NVME boot drives mirrored and multiple HDD's in whatever ZFS configuration that makes sense for you. The advantages of ZFS are many. The big one is instantaneous snapshots with a bonus being data resiliency. It's best suited to servers but can be used on a workstation.

HTop and Calculator as Snaps ? Using Snaps for these trivial apps is a bad choice and is a disappointing direction for Ubuntu to take

Installed it, last night, onto one of my main machines. I'm not usually a fan of GNOME but I'm feeling good about the system, thus far!

zfs uses a lot of ram! around 1 gigs or more! you shouldn't use it unless you are on a system with a raid setup or a nas system.

Thank you, great video (even though GNOME isn't my favorite)
