CHORUS

Mountain is about listening to the Earth and reclaiming sustainable ways of living. We wrote it on a hilltop in Tobago, my maternal homeland. It is about the deep teachings of the spirits of nature or the Orishas as they are called in the West African Yoruba tradition. The "ancient life" of our African ancestors and all of our human ancestors was a life of deep connection and balance with nature. The lyrics are a reminder that everything we could ever need has been given to us by the earth, however most humans have forgotten this due to colonization. As a result we are destroying the planet and have created a world full of inequity and oppression. My son's verse/rap speaks to this issue from his own perspective as a then thirteen year old. He calls for us to change our path here on earth rather than thinking we can escape to another planet.

The song is full of gratitude, joy and love. In the words of my sister Koffee:
