I stumbled on this on reddit and I think it's great. I like it because it shows just how much a symbol representing a resource affects us. I can hardly believe all the connections made in this video. Highly under viewed.

Just found these. They are awesome. Agree with other comments. Very much under viewed. Impressed with all aspects: delivery, research knowledge and humor!

You put so much love and effort into these videos. It makes one wonder if they're a passion project, or your bread and butter.

In August, the English used to celebrate a holiday in thanksgiving of their wheat harvest, called hlaf-maes or loaf-mass.

I recently discovered your videos and am thoroughly impressed with your research, level of detail, and the way in which you present it. I imagine I could listen to you talk for hours on a variety of topics; over a few gimlets, of course.

Wowow. Instantly subscribed. This is such a great video, and basically exactly the kind of stuff I've always looked for and have been interested in.

Hlaf a loaf is better than none, no matter how you slice it!

I buy unsliced bread and cut it myself.
Does the rank Earl have the same historical meaning as Lord? I know it's root is jarl - a warrior chieftain but did the jarl have the responsiblity to feed and entertain the troops?

Great video, I kinda wish you had compared mate and companion though, they were born from very similar ideas, mate is related to the word meat and it means food, the original word had ge- which meant "with" and it's related to the "com" in companion, so OE ġemetta meant someone you share your meal with, much like companion since Latin panis could also mean food in general, much like the word bread

I love your videos and the concept of pan-and-scan diagram tu support the story telling. Just to add, Proto-Germanic *khlaibas is so close to "xl'eb" in Slavic languages (Russian & Serbian "хлеб", Polish "chleb", Czech / Slovak "chléb", Bosnian "hljeb" etc.) so the two probably share common root in Proto-Indo-European?

Though sliced bread is the best thing since Betty White.

Is the proto-germanic khlaibaz connected to the Arabic khobz (خبز)?

" though we can`t trace loaf back any further"- off course, because you don`t even consider to check words - chleb / хлеб . Is it intentional misinformation or just ignorance?
