Canada Post workers hit the picket lines Friday after contract negotiations with their employer failed to conclude by the strike deadline — and Ottawa is signalling it's not ready to intervene.

The Canadian Union of Postal Workers said approximately 55,000 workers are striking, claiming little progress has been made in the bargaining process.

"The negotiations are very, very difficult," Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon told reporters in Montreal on Friday morning, adding that little progress has been made.

MacKinnon said he is working to facilitate the conclusion of a collective agreement, but each day brings "a new series of issues" that complicate efforts toward finding a resolution.

The entire nation should go on strike to make Trudeau resign.

Canada Post loses hundreds of millions of dollars per year... it's not sustainable and unfortunately is likely headed towards closing. Even if employees get higher pay after this strike, most of them will likely get laid off soon.

It takes two weeks for a small package between Toronto and Montreal.

They want more money because of inflation, what about people who is on welfare or disability or old age pension they don't get a increase when the cost of living goes up

Canada Post has offered an 11.5% wage increase over 4 years, protection of the defined benefit pension and expanded health care benefits. Yes there's no guaranteed job security the corporation is losing copious amounts of money. What do these workers expect?

The quality of service at Canada-Post is on questioning ! I have lost 3 packages sent by Canada Post within 2 months. Either Canada-Post has many thieves or many of their workers do not work properly but they still want money, money, money ....

Government spends foolishly -> inflation goes up -> middle class workers can't buy anything -> the ones that can strike go on strike -> Canadians suffer.

Why isn't Canada Post made an 'essential service'? Small businesses who depend on this Federal service & remote areas needing this access should not have to suffer because the Posties strike. Posties have the right to negotiate their contracts & disagree -- but then get in arbitration pronto & no strikes allowed. Front line nurses aren't allowed to strike. They are an essential service. And I maintain that Postal Service is same.

Good job, Liberal Party of Canada. Keep printing money and waste it... Runaway inflation, obviously all the unions are going to strike. People that are not unionized can't pull this stunt because they will lose their jobs...

US postal service generated $7.1 billion last year. Canada post corporation is $750 million in the hole. Why?

I waited a week for my package, and they decided to go on strike the very day it was supposed to arrive.

Executives won’t negotiate. Their salaries and bonuses are guaranteed. They own Purolator and a couple other courier services. So they make more money during strike as other couriers get busier.
Not sure why this isn’t a conflict of interest and why bonuses are guaranteed.
Also they have cut pay by more than 15% from 5 years ago then offer 11% of 5 years and they won’t guarantee another pay cut.

So how am I supposed to get my daily supply of KFC, Pizza Hotline, and A&W coupons? And Realtor ads and credit card offers? And ... oh, that's pretty much everything, I guess.
