My basic Bushcraft 101 video on starting a fire with fatwood and a ferro rod or simply how to use fatwood to start a fire using other sources of flame.

From Wikipedia: Fatwood, also known as "fat lighter," "lighter wood," "rich lighter," "pine knot," [1] "lighter knot," "heart pine" or "lighter'd" [sic], is derived from the heartwood of pine trees. The stump (and tap root) that is left in the ground after a tree has fallen or has been cut is the primary source of fatwood, as the resin-impregnated heartwood becomes hard and rot-resistant over time after the death of the main tree. Other locations, such as the joints where limbs intersect the trunk, can also be harvested. Although most resinous pines can produce fatwood, in the southeastern United States the wood is commonly associated with longleaf pine (Pinus palustris), which historically was highly valued for its high pitch production.

My favorite fire lighting method. I love the smell of fatwood. Had a buddy send me some from Wisconsin that was actually from the Great Peshtigo Fire of 1871, it's super concentrated and smells incredibly sweet. Cheers buddy

Red pine I think should produce fatwood. Sometimes it can be tricky to find but once you find a few sources you see it everywhere. I'm going to the NJ pine barrens this weekend and will probably come back with some fatwood let me know if you want any.

Got to love a good piece of fatwood. I have had fair luck finding it in larger dead branches on big white pines right where the branch meets the tree. I have also found it in very old stumps that have all but rotted away
