DIY: Making My Own Fatwood

How to make your own fat-wood fire starter. You will need: Recycled Candle Wax, Heat source, Pot, Scrap Wood, and and pair of pliers. Note: I know this is not true fat-wood, however it works just as well at getting a fire going.

Now try vasoline petroleum jelly and cotton balls. 1 strike guarantee and quicker to make. Or go out into the forest and harvest. Very easy to find.

I have read that soaking cotton balls in wax works really well. Also dryer lint works well too.

Hmm, what makes fatwood is the pitch and sap that has gathered in the bottom of a tree not wax. I think this would work better if you added say turpentine to the wax and let it soak too. I don't really know as I have no tried it but just a thought.

Fantastic! My sister and her hub are gonna want this, at home and camping! Me too, for the bugout bag!

I'm also a Hoosier, I use a good quality paper towel and roll it up and then use string to wrap around it to hold it together then dip it twice in wax but leave 1 inch at one end dry . These will burn for 20 minutes on snow. Cheap and easy to make.

Or you could collect birch tar and soak the wood in it, that would be better and might be more convenient

Nice idea, thanks for the vid. I’m going to be making some fire cloth for starters which uses cheesecloth and linseed oil. So the progression to try seems to be soaking wood pieces in linseed oil to make fatwood. Have you tried it? Of course I like the comment on just buying fatwood to keep on hand - picked up a 5 lb bag at HD for about 6 dollars...

You should do a video on how to make breathable air or wet water. Sometimes I can't find good air and I'm out of breath. And sometimes water is frozen and I need to wash my hands.

Cool vid. What knife are you using here?

This would work better if the wax was to seal it after you infused it with something more flamable, like mineral spirits

Nice! For how long did you let the stick sit in the wax?

Great idea!👍I wonder if you soaked it in vegetable oil, or olive oil, and let it dry...If that would work good too?🤔

Find a pine forest. You will find fat wood. I call it rich pine. I don't even have that much property and I have it all over the place. If you know what to look for you will never have to do this.
