I used to sit at Papa Gino's pizzeria and watch the protests when I was a kid. Saw my Jr high social studies teacher get dragged on the ground by P.D. Those we're crazy days!

If I heard there was a problem at a nuclear power plant anywhere near me, I'd be getting my important shit, getting in the car, then driving very far away. I have all my important documents (birth certificate, social security, college documents, tax/bank info, and pharmacy tech license in one thing, so if I ever have to leave in a hurry, I can just grab that, my purse, my phone, and my keys, then leave. Since a total meltdown can take some time to occur, I'd probably pack a bag of valuable/prized possessions and clothes. Of course, I'd take my dog with me.

The design specification for the working life of a nuclear reactor is 40 years. As reactors age the severe conditions radioactivity inflicts on reactor parts degrade them and make breakdowns, leaks and maintenance problems more frequent and more expensive. As reactors age, not only do they leak more, break down more, and run less efficiently, but they become more brittle and suffer from neutron activation, causing non-radioactive reactor parts to become radioactive. The average age of the 94 "operating" nuclear reactors in the U.S. is over 42 years. In addition, the cost to produce electrical energy by nuclear fission has increased by 33% in the last decade. The cost to produce electrical energy by solar PV and wind turbines have been reduced 80% and 70% respectively. Nuclear is by far the most expensive way to generate electrical energy, even though utilities using nuclear fission are not paying for their 2 most expensive liabilities: waste disposal and health and environmental damage.
Every reactor in operation would shut down today if it were not for 2 things: 1) nuclear proliferation and 2) as soon as a reactor is shut down, even if it is losing money, it immediately goes from the asset side of the ledger to the liability side. Very expensive site maintenance and security costs, waste management costs, decommissioning costs (if that ever happens) still remain with no income. The utility and investors will immediately become bankrupt. Why do you think ownership of the nuclear industry in France has been taken over by the French government? Pity the poor French taxpayers. Are you next?
