Dig into the science of fecal microbial transplantation, where doctors transfer feces into a patient to help reset their gut microbiome.

--

1,700 years ago, Chinese alchemist Ge Hong was renowned for his soup that could cure diarrhea-stricken patients. It had a surprising secret ingredient: feces. While it might seem unwise to consume feces, exciting new research suggests that taking poop into the body in other ways might benefit our health. Kathryn M. Stephenson & David L. Suskind share the science of fecal microbial transplantation.

So when you say "eat shxt" to people now, it's actually a blessing and you're actually wishing them well

I've had this done and it helped so much. The immune system really stems from the gut. Haven't really been sick much since 2019

I absolutely love this animation style! As someone who gets easily disgusted at medical stuff, the happy and sad faces, and the cute colours really help me enjoy the topic!!

This shows the correlation between a healthy diet and the risks your physical and mental health take when you don't follow one. Whoever said "you are what you eat" hit a bullseye.

I’m excited for this! I hope it comes a long way in my lifetime. I myself struggle with gut issues and it’d be a miracle for it to be fixed so simply.

I almost died from overgrowth (bacteria, yeast, etc) after lots of antibiotics for MRSA, and my gut/ brain haven't been even 10% of what they were before getting sick.

After feeling like death every time you eat, and having everything exit you, like an extreme faucet within hours of eating, you would do just about anything for an improvement.

A FMT is on my wish list- but in the U.S you have to almost die from c-diff multiple times, and it's around $15k last time I checked to have it done in other places :( (But would likely give me my life back).

A case study in my Psychology textbook actually mentioned this! It helped improve a man's depression.
It was cool to learn more about it. Thanks TED-Ed!
