The anti static gun will work. But keep in mind, it's not cheap. $100.  True, by the time you exhaust the gun with each record taking about 10 clicks,   it will come out to about two cents a record.  But I prefer just wet washing my records to get rid of the static.

here is a great tip i have found out myself for a specific type of static: in case you get a record that has been stored in a cellar for 10-20+ years, most the time it can happen, that there is like some pressed in dirt, or water rezidue (from the atmosphere down there) on the record. even on sealed copies !! when you clean them the normal way with spray and microfiber coth, there still will be cracles and static over the whole record... itz really deep in the grooves. to say first, i use a dj needle (shure m44-7) with spheric cut, that djs use to scratch on records (so no super hi-def audiophile stuff). so what i do is, i put the needle in the runoutgroove, and spin the record backwards to the beginning. this somehow removes the cracles and static from this hard to get rid of dust or leftovers from celler storage. after that, play the record thru the normal way again and you will get a def. better sound. sometimes it requires two trys, but most the time i get my records sound clean again... sometimes i could also transform VG records to EX with that method, soundwise. but it really depends on the kind of dirt... greetz..indy

My way of removing static worked very well, I divorced the cause of a lot of static a few years back. For removing static on a vinyl LP I have found an anti-static brush works well. Another method is to spray the record with an anti-static record cleaning fluid. Spray on, wipe off with a lint free brush. I used to use an anti-static gun, it worked well but when it wore down I never bothered to replace it.

I was dealing with a ton of pops and cracks when playing my records, and was cleaning the hell out of them thinking they were dirty. Dry cleaning, wet cleaning, etc. Then I finally figured out that it was static! Bought a static brush similar to what Jared showed and problem gone. I think I'm going to pull the trigger on some anti-static inner sleeves now too. I'd love one of the guns, but they're pricey and do eventually wear out. I have hear at minimum you can get 10, 000 uses, so about a penny per pull of the trigger. Not bad I guess.

0:23 Yes! I have always had that problem and it annoys the heck out of me!

I always wet/vacuum cleaned any new record, be it brand new sealed or new to me (used) with my Nitty Gritty. I highly recommend this machine for any Vinyl Record enthusiast, especially audiophiles. Then I use my Hunt E.D.A Mark 6 anti static brush. The two methods together have incredible results. I've bought brand new audiophile vinyl records that have static after removing the shrink wrap. Also, I agree that the MoFi sleeves are the best. Another suggestion for those on a budget is to go to your record store and see if they sell used sleeves. If they do, you can often buy anti static sleeves for less than 25¢ each. About the ZeroStat, my father owned one of these in the 80's when they were still owned by ZeroStat in the US and swore by them, although he used it more to shock my mom by surprise, which is why it probably wore out. It is now made by a British company called Milty. I understand, though I have never personally used one, that they are the same specs. Thanks for the video!

To cure my static electricity problem I use a Nagaoka Kilavolt No. 103. This is an anti-static “gun” from the 1980’s. The product is long out of production and the company defunct. I picked one up on eBay from a hi-fi store here in Phoenix that a small supply of new, old stock—there all gone now. It is powered by a single C-cell battery and it works fantastic, which is great, because static is a big problem here in Phoenix where we have very dry air-conditioned air. I never realized how much of the pops and clicks that I was hearing on my records came from static until I got my Kilavot!

Thanks Jarrett! You make my newly found hobby so much more fun and easy. Love your videos. My dad has got crates and crates of records, but they're all freestyle/hip hop lol he used to use them for dj scratching back in the 80's. I started my own collection and I'm having so much fun doing it :D

Anti Static gun are very very good, I work in a chemical lab and we use that to ensure that static electricity don't ruin our chemical, that's how good they are

The ZeroStat guns work great actually. I inherited an old one from the 70's, works like a champ!

Hi Jarrett, yes I agree, static is annoying. So I have now started getting the anti static inner sleeves for my records and I also use a cleaning brush to clean a record before I play it. Not entirely sure if it is an anti static brush but it does a good job cleaning the dust off the record. I have also got a cork mat on my turntable and I think that helps to eliminate static as well. As for the static gun, I don't have one myself and, to be honest they are a little expensive and out of my price range, but I think the things I use do a good job for me without the static gun anyway.

I've been using antistatic cloth (like a Tiger Cloth) & it works really well too!

Interesting way to use the brush. Other sites have said to pull the brush to the outside. I don't see why you would want to pull debris into the center of your records. Also. The brush doesn't get rid of heavy static.

Item no. 2 works best with record off platter. On platter, use does not eliminate static, no matter the direction the brush is directed.

That brush ruined a bunch of sealed new records I had purchased. After few plays the records were noisy and I couldn't figure out why. Then I looked at the vinyls under strong light and saw multiple mini scratches . Since then I've never used carbon fiber brushes again. I use good anti static sleeves, the same ones you recommend (MOFI) or Disk-Keeper.  Only when the records are very dirty I use the Spin Clean which works fine and leaves no scratches.  My records are absolutely fine. I agree with the person who commented about playing the record backwards to reduce noise, it also works for me.

If I use water based cleaning, no vacuum and poly inner sleeves, I have no static. I use the anti-static brush to remove dust before each playing. I've always understood it is best to pull the brush out from the record rather then inside. This motion will pull the charge away from the record. Static is electricity, make sure you are grounded. I have a metal platter and I run my right thumb along the side of the record touching the record and metal platter. While doing this, I use the brush with the other hand and pull the brush/charge out away from the record. Doing this while standing in your wool socks on carpet doesn't help. Know what I mean? :)

Using vacuum type cleaning machines introduces static and was the best method until ultrasonic. I am now using ultrasonic cleaning and air dry the vinyl. I only use distilled water, some 90% alcohol and a few drops of Kodak photo-flow to break surface tension which allows the water to sheet off the vinyl easier. It is now considered the best cleaning method available IMHO.

Another option is the Spin-clean tray and towel drying the records with a lint free cloth. The method is static free and doesn't clean the vinyl all that well but it is better than nothing for sure. A great starter-kit!

Quick little note if your records dirty in your using the brush to clean your record and not just for anti-static make sure you move the Dirt away from the record not to the middle. Otherwise you records just going to be dirty again from centrifical Force pushing out the dirt particles.

Thanks for the advice, my vinyls have been having a lot of static so this video is really helpful! Great Tips!!(:

Wet cleaning vinyl (like using spin record cleaner) would be most effective way to remove static. Of course if you want to play record right away, then it is not most practical, way but I thought it should have been mentioned.
