Today, we'll install ZFS on a New Openmediavault Install using Proxmox kernal. ZFS is great for servers with multiple drives that need error checking.

Glad to see this is a mature feature now under OMV! I remember implementing this manually a few years ago.

Great video, can you do a 2023 follow-up video to let us know if you still think it's a good idea to run ZFS on OMV?
Thanks

Great video. One issue I ran into was that omv did see all 4 of my drives in the disks menu but when I went to create a zfs pool only 2 of the drives showed up ! It turns out all I had to do was wipe whatever was on the 2 missing drives. The wipe is under the disks menu. click on the drive and click wipe.

Now that you have shown us how to install ZFS, can you explain BTRFS? Thanks

Hey @TechnoDadLife! First, Really enjoy your videos and as a man learning about RAID vs ZFS this was super helpful. Couple of questions: Does OMV have the ability to do auto resilvering, adding a 'spare' to the zpool to auto rebuild should a disk fail, or in-general how does one go about rebuilding/recovering from a disk failure in say Raid-Z2? I'd LOVE to either know more about that, or see a video delving into ZFS pools more advanced options. :) - Bruce.

Hi TDL! What if you start with a RAID1 ZFS pool in Proxmox? Would you follow this same tutorial but choose the single presented zfs based drive in OVM and select "Basic?" -Thanks in advance.

Do you still need the proxmox kernal to install ZFS in OMV 5?

I love your videos and you've been instrumental in my getting an OMV server up and running. Thank you. I'm wondering if you could do a video on setting up and configuring the SnapRaid plugin for OMV. Thanks again.

Thanks for the Video. When I try to do the same, none of my disks are getting listed both in RAID and ZFS plugins. I tried both quick and secure disk wipes, but no luck. Currently using Proxmox with linux kernal version - Linux 5.4.78-2-pve. Your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Great video. Very good!
I have a doubt: What is the difference in using RAID in "Storage>>Raid Management" and in "zfs>>Create Pool>>RAID-Z*"?
I'm going to use the ZFS file system. Do I have to create the Raid directly in the ZFS options (zfs>>Create Pool>>RAID-Z*)? If I want to grow my pool, add more disks, is it possible?
Thank you for your attention and work.
Success.

I'm curious if you have a ZFS pool that was created in TrueNAS Core 12 could it be imported into OMV with the Import Pool function?

I have an existing OMV 5 install setup with Plex and a few other things using Docker. Is it safe to do the ZFS setup on this system or do I need to start with a fresh instal of OMV?

Hi TechnoDad, thanks for this video, now i have a little DIY NAS with ZFS. Now i want to use a ZFS mirror for the root FS (like Proxmox do), obviously separated from the data FS.. It is possible? Thanks in advance!

Thanks for the excellent video tutorial. In my case i am moving from TrueNAS to OpenMediaVault. I managed to install zfs on OpenMediaVault using your guide. I managed to import the existing ZFS pools that were previously configured in TrueNAS into OpenMediaVault. But i am stuck at how to make these pools again visible through SMB on my network. I can create a shared folder on the pools and read and write data in the shared folder so does not look to be a permissions issue. I just cant seem to share the data that is already there on the pools. Maybe i am missing some step.

How do you create a vdev in OMV (I want to put 3 mirrored vdevs in 1 stripe).

Hi! The same works with the newest OMV 5.0.5 and the Proxmox 6 - but in my case, i'm wondering about the ZFS management. You can add a Volume on a pool, but there are no confs about mountpoints. They will not mount anyway. Is there any workaround? Whats about the ACLs and Quota Manament?
cheers :D
THANKS FOR THE TUTORIAL!
