[405] A Showing of How and Why Keys Work!

Today we are going to look at how a key works in regard to its bitting and the way it matches up with the key pins. This is a topic which many people may have not though of before, but I hope this video will help bring some more clarity.

A few terms:
Key bitting: This is the “ups and downs” or “teeth” of the key which lifts the key pins to the correct height.
Key pins (bottom pins): These are small pins which match up the key bitting to open the lock
Driver pins (top pins): These are pins which push into the plug to keep the lock secure
Plug: Area where the key pins are
Bible: Area where the driver pins originate

I hate how every video is just “breaking in” or lock picking, I JUST DONT KNOW HOW TO USE THE DAMN KEY

Lots of lock videos out there but the more voices and information out there the better. I appreciate your contributions and enjoy your slower presentation and more laid back personality than some of the other youtube lock channels.

I like how you lay the pins over the key. It makes the bitting much easier to understand. Thanks!

Before I started lock picking as a hobby I always thought the key pins rode on the POINTS of the key, which never made sense to me because when the key wore down from friction either in the lock or with other keys in a pocket over time etc, the keys still worked! My Mom's car key was almost smooth and still worked!
This video very clearly shows how it's the valleys between the points that matter, and not the points themselves!

Very nice.

Showing the use of your plug follower and explaining why it is needed I think helps understand what is going on inside the lock. And also helps someone new know to use a follower and not have lock bits flying all over.

Great demonstration. I was always confused as to whether or not the key pins sat on the highest points of the key, on the little ledges in the valleys of the key. This cleared it up perfectly.

Sometimes it's good to demo it this way. It takes away the core and the bible so you can simply concentrate on the key and the pins. People should do more videos like this to explain how things work.

As an example, people talk about Lockwood key pins having a tiny taper on the top which causes it to easily overet. A demo like this one would be a great way to explain it.

Why aren't the pins falling down on their own in that cylinder? I never seen a cylinder where the pins need to pushed down like that. Does the lock it goes to just need strong springs?
