Don't listen to him. I've read the book and yes it most definitely IS worth buying and reading if you are interested in history. Even unpleasant history. If the 'actual' history of the British empire makes you uncomfortable, Good. Because they did do some terrible things. Of course most world powers, The United States included have done some terrible things and none of them should be forgotten.

wow did we read the same book? I did not get that undertone at all. I thought it was as objectively written as possible.

This is why I love this channel! Here is a unique, biblically rooted, discussion of a book that you WILL NOT find on other channels. Keep crushing, friend!

I would definitely recommend buying this book. It's an incredible story greatly told by the author.

This is one of the best books I ever read. I don't agree with anything this gentleman said. Learned a lot. Many things we say today (like "under the weather") originated on these ships back in the 1700s! Good reading.

Absolutely astonishing book. You will not finish this book without a soul refreshing appreciation for the daily things we take for granted. These men truly suffered beyond comprehension.

Read that book, The Wager, and immediately read Patrick O’Brian’s The Unknown Shore - O’Brian’s brings it together (historical fiction) and is accurate

Disagree! This book is worth owning and rereading. It’s ultimately about life stories lost to time, and features literally a trial on how the events of story will be recorded in history. It warns about the sanitation of history, and its messages are the opposite about what this guy pulled from it.

Totally agree. Great book and I finished it in under 24 hours. I have the same gripe.

Regarding his comments on human depravity I completely agree. the Creek Indian War led by Andrew Jackson completely proves the point

A couple things I appreciate the xhristian perspective sense I am.one as well but I don't look at past mistakes the same I take them as a lesson not to repeat the past even though history seems to rhyme

Valid criticism for sure. Loved the book, but recognized the "evil colonizer" narrative. Things were pretty bad for sailors in that day and age. Even so, there was an element of honor and dignity in some of the sailors portrayed in the book, such as Byron. There is a moral struggle when suffering, struggle and death are the most likely outcome.

Whole heartedly disagree. Looking at the mistakes and failures of the past is how we don’t repeat them. Colonization is wrong, that shouldn’t be a “hot take”.

The author’s virtue signaling was obvious to some extent, but I still enjoyed reading the book.

The book is great, and David Grann didnt make a bad point. He reported the facts and did it interestingly. I'm happy I bought it.

The writers in the New testament criticized power structures as they appeared in the early church, especially when they affected theology and understanding of the Gospel.

We're all sinful, AND theres nothing wrong learning from our past and having disdain for power structures that are harmful
