Jason Wright is a professor of Astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State. His more recent paper titled, Dyson Spheres, looks at the overall history of the idea of building a megastructure to best use a star's energy. Professor Wright joins John Michael Godier on Event Horizon to discuss the subject in depth, looking at what can be done with the energy to how and have we searched for signs of these alien megastructures built by alien civilizations. One close call was Tabby's star or KIC8462 and what was causing the stars light to dim during transits.

Jason is one of my favourite guest's on your show. Guy flows with words, he explains his points smoothly and easily and even if it didn't say so, one could figure out that he is a teacher and you two really flow with conversation.
Although, nobody tops up Dr Zubrin in Sheere energy and optimism output which that man radiates.

Actually you could send a huge amount of information via the “louver” method with a few modifications. Imagine a solar powered, planet sized, wafer-thin LED TV screen or even just mini actuators to let pixel-sized points of sunlight through the framework. Sort of like a gigantic version of those nighttime flying billboards that planes tow across the sky.

Remember…the star is the power source. You have all the energy and/or backlighting you need. All you need to do to send the info is a simple transmission from the host world of whatever “program” you want to put on the mega-screen. It could be simple on-off pulses or domino-like grids, similar to the original Voyager plate, or a “talking head”, or a travelogue/documentary of the planet.

And those images could change as rapidly as you can change the picture on a computer monitor, so definitely complex binary programs could also be sent. And the LED’s could be laser LEDs for focus over long distances.

I bet we could create rather large structures like this right now.
