It wasn't sufficient to counter American air attacks.

But to be honest, that doesn't say much, given that American Air Attacks came from 14 Essex-class Carriers, 1 Yorktown-class Carrier, 1 Lexington-class Carrier, and around 30 light carriers.
And that's only the US. The British were also present in the attacks.

The Yamato specifically sunk one light carrier that got too close.
It never fought a Battleship for one simple reason, why the idiots who say that "The Iowa and Bismarck was better" don't and won't understand.
The Allies knew, that the Yamato was like the Tiger. A single battleship would get decimated, The Yamato could even stand up against two battleships, and yes the Americans have much more, but a sherman is cheap, and while US Battleships are way less costly than precision crafted British and Japanese ships are, they are still brutally expensive.
