The opening credits (which are only comprised of the main title) and opening scene of the 10th Star Trek film, "Star Trek Nemesis" (2002). It's been 3 years since the end of the Dominion War, and the Romulan military is attempting to convince the Senate to accept the offer of one of its veterans, Shinzon of Remus, to join forces and become a that not even the United Federation of Planets can stand in their way. The Praetor, reaffirming the Senate's rejection of the offer, dismisses them. Leaving after their dismissal to supposedly meet with a Tholian ambassador, Commander T'lora leaves something at her Senate seat...

The imperial senate will no longer be of any concern to us, I have just received word that the emperor has ‘dissolved’ the council permanently.

This was one of the rare senate meetings where something productive actually got done.

You were right, master. The negotiations were short.

I remember seeing this in the theaters. As soon as that theme hits at 1:06 I immediately knew it was the Romulans. I have no idea how Jerry Goldsmith pulled that off.

“I dissolved the Senate.” — best line ever

"Maybe we shouldn't have allowed an unidentified device in the senate

Picard: How did Shinzon’s coup succeed?
Janeway: My source says Shinzon dissolved the Senate and left everyone petrified. All dissent ultimately crumbled.

I would have loved to see the Tholian Ambassador in his life-support suit.
Missed opportunity.

Shinzon actually survived this film and was imprisoned. Then he became friends with a young Talia al-Guhl, then eventually became Bane.

I still thought this was better than Insurrection.

3:44 The Imperial Senate will no longer be of any concern to us. I have just received word that the Emperor has dissolved the council permanently. The last remnants of the Old Republic have been swept away.

The Remus military-ish march at the beginning is just... perfect.

So it basically went like: "Oh so you refuse our proposal? Have fun with this fistful of thaleron radiation!"

The janitor who cleans the Senate chambers must have had a *really* bad day after this.

Imagine being the most paranoid Romulan in the room, who sees that green light show start, and immediately runs out of the room. (that would be me) It reminds me of "War of the Worlds" when the tripod comes out of the ground, and everyone (including Tom Cruise) is just watching. The smart thing to do when weird shit like that happens is to run away, and watch from a safer distance.

If you read the novels that follow up after this, you find out that Shinzon had already prearranged for this to happen; and had specifically instructed Senator Talura to press a certain button not "if" but *when* the senate rejects the peace offer he was extending to them in a fake surrender; already his Reman troops had taken over security in Ki Baratan, the Rihannsu Capital City; and she was explicitly told to not be in the streets at the time it becomes revealed; as the Reman guards were already instructed to eliminate any Rihannsu at all they found in the streets for a prearranged time limit; he himself would immediately remove the evidence by transporter and move off to ambush the scheduled successor in the interregnum so as to eliminate any possible government... as for any reprisals; I doubt there were: the reason why is that the Remans were too valuable to be wiped out, unlike their pathetic master-race.

I would love to hear a full-length version of the Romulan Theme. I can't decide which is better, this or the Klingon Theme composed for the opening scene of Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Another example of a movie not living up to the opening music and action.
