Autism| Sisters Painting Together

I didn't know that Tessie was going to be quite so excited to join in on Maggie's painting time but lately anytime Maggie does anything Tessie is right there excited to join in. If Maggie is doing school, Tessie has to do it (although she does not want to do her own school work), when Maggie has her talker, Tessie has hers too, and probably tuned in to the same screen. If her big sister is doing something it is the thing to do and apparently painting is no exception.

Welcome to Autmazing! We talk a lot about autism around here because we are a family with five kids and a mom and dad who are autistic and we believe that autism acceptance is extremely important. We also post videos daily (or almost daily), about topics that we feel are important and sometimes there's a vlog thrown in too. We think it's important to see that being autistic is just that- another way of being human. You'll get glimpses of what's going on at the moment in our lives, usually in a little town in Michigan, or in the nearby city that Paul works in.

We are a family of 7, with a Mom named Cammie and a Dad named Paul. Sadie is 12, Maggie is 10, Patrick is 8, James is 6, and Tessie is now 4!

Maggie, you were a great big sister to Tessie. You were watching her paint and and even showed Tessie that she should be using her paint brush on her painting. That was awesome to show her.

People make instant vanilla pudding with a little extra milk so more flowable, divide into separate bits and tint it with food coloring. Typically used as finger paint in preschool.

We use plain food color with qtips to paint Easter eggs.

Also water from cooking beets would work on a brush.

Maybe instead of just a plain paper have one with a shape that they can try to color in? It sorta looks like that they don't really know what to do with paint except for mark up and eat?

I think edible paint [or less toxic] is a good idea, and not confusing perse. You can still teach here no,
but if she does it anyway it won't harm here [as much].

I wouldn’t do the edible paints because you doing want to confuse Tessie and have her think it’s okay to eat paint. Later she may find real paint lying around your house (or school or elsewhere) and think it’s okay to eat it. My child loves playdoh but would constantly eat it so I made edible playdoh. When she encountered real play dough she thought it was okay to eat it and didn’t understand the difference. Just keeping exposing Tessie to paint and reinforcing that we don’t eat paint; as she matures she’ll get it 😊

Maybe you need paint that is safe to eat, but tastes terrible?
