This year marks 100 years since the discovery of insulin, a breakthrough that has gone on to save the lives of millions people living with diabetes.

Scientists already knew in 1920 that type 1 diabetes was caused by the pancreas not producing enough insulin, but they couldn’t treat the problem because no one had been able to find a way of extracting insulin from pancreas cells.

Professor Mike Lean, professor of human nutrition at the University of Glasgow, takes us on the journey of how Canadian surgeon Frederick Banting made a discovery in 1921 that changed how we treat diabetes forever.

This is an edited version of the Banting Memorial Lecture presented at the Diabetes UK Professional Conference 2021.

Banting died tragically in a plane crash in 1941, but he has not been forgotten.
